#1 Re: Where to Ride? » Utah OHV street legal information » 2009-04-15 19:41:03

as for that.  wait to you hear the "rest of the story. smile   Just last week i renewed the OHV sticker thinking that i'd get a creditwhen did get the plates.  we have the Utah Side by Side Group ride this Saturday and i needed something!   NO refund-NO credit.   So...at least i donated this year.   However, i think  $ 103 dollars is a bit high.   Then again, i'm old.....what do i know!   i've had a motorcycle license since the 80's (started late in life)so that wasn't an issue for me.  my concern was for next month.  as in getting from the KOA in moab to the arena and getting gas. it should be better for Sand Hollow State Park and up at the `Gorge too.

i didn't think Utah would ever allow us to be street legal.

Do you think that eventually that either the Moab or Blackhills UTV Rally will be what Sturgis is to the Harley riders?

well.....i'm feeling like the happiest man in Utah right now!  My Ranger is now street legal as of today!!!  big_smile     lol  big_smile

It wasn't without some hassle though.  The motorcycle inspector wouldn't allow my tires because they say on them "not for highway use."  I told him that the tires were not an issue.  He gave me the telephone number for the D.M.V. and told me to call them.   I did and a woman told me to have the inspector call her.  We got it straightened out!  It was the first ATV/UTV inspection for the Emissions on 600.  They thought the Ranger was amazing.  i told`m to expect seeing a variety of UTV's because other inspection stations refused to inspect the Ranger.  Hurah for Emissions!!!

i will be on the streets in Moab next month during the rally!  big_smile

first of all Blue Rhino......welcome!   Thanks for posting this up too!   My significant other is going to be pleased when she see's your web site.....another opportunity to do some online shopping!   I liked the looks of that GPS tracker.   Might be easier on these ancient eyes then the Cobra device i have now.  Is the group going to be camping out for this ride planned or is everyone trailering to the meeting point?   Have always wanted to ride the Pony Express and visit real ghost town's.  Anyway, my wife and i will (if allowed) join your group.

btw.....love that signature line

Not sure what you ran into but I am a regular poster at ATVUtah and my book is for sale there.
There is no anti sxs attitude there any more then there is an anti atv attitude here.

The ONLY trail you are not welcome on are 50" wide trails.  That is not ATVers doing that to you, its the USFS and BLM.

Aside from that what does your post have to do with riding in St George and possibly joining in on the fun at the Jam?

I can tell you that the main organizer of the Tri-State Jam is a Rhino rider.

well....not into flame wars and not about to start one.  you mentioned the jam and the dates it was taking place.  that'a in the same time frame that we were planning to go down.  haven't reserved an RV spot yet at Sand Hollow.   nice to know the attitude is/has changed.  i know SUWA is our joint enemy but never thought BLM to be a problem.  that's where we do most of our personal riding.   anyways, hope you all have a blast at the jam!  won't say more in this thread.  zipped

So are you all participating in the Tri-State ATV Jamboree?

It is March 11-14.

http://www.atvutah.com/tristatejam/

I had a great time there a few years back.

gee.....didn't know a thing about this taking place.  Felt about as welcome as a fox in a chicken coop when encountering the atvutah forum a couple of years ago.  at the time they didn't have any use for side by sides and the attitude was down right unfriendly.  has that attitude improved any since?  noticed they added trails for the  s x s`s at their big jamboree.  that attitude is why it doesn't bother me that when licensing the Ranger, there won't be $5 going for maintenance on ATV trails that i can't ride on nor am i welcomed on.

big_smile Welcome slvr08jkrbc ! There usually a ride in the works around here - keep tabs on the "Goin' Riding... Who's with Me?" topics.

My wife and I have ridden alone, but it is a better idea to have another machine along for saftey. We take some day trips in the summer to American Fork Canyon, you are welcome to come along. The Piute Trail in Central UT is a great trip. Little Sahara trips are always fun. The trip in in two weeks to Sand Hollow will be fun, try and make it. I would also highly recommend Moab any chance you get - there is nothing like it  big_smile  The UTV Rally May 13-16th is a great time
http://www.utvrally.com/
maybe we should plan a pre-rally trip in March-April...

Smokem, I will give you a call next time we go out. Would like to meet you. Why don't you make the Sand Hollow trip, you can preview for family trip big_smile

i'd love to go on the upcoming trip to the "Hollow" and will ask the Mrs. about it upon her return today.  Our Rv's insurance would need to be re-instated ASAP.  Allstate has a credit program where one can be given credit for the month's the RV isn't being used.  Good way to save a few bucks.   Told the agent to put me back in the system for the first of March.   But we will  see.

But i'd appreciated getting a call and would join you for a ride!   as for a pre-rally ride?   that could be a blast too!   there was only a handful of people from Utah at the first UTV Rally in Moab which surprised me because so many people here have`m.   spend a lot of time in this forum because i think this is the best place for an opportunity to hook up with other riders on local runs.

gotta get the Ranger inspected, get the plates, install radio/speakers/amp.....then i'm ready to go.   hoping to have all this by next week.

#7 Re: Yamaha Rhino Photo Gallery » MY 4 SEAT RHINO WITH WALKER EVANS SHOCKS » 2009-02-01 08:58:42

nice!

see you have a RZR too.  nice thing about the Rhino is that there's a heck of a lot more out on the market in the way of accessories or add ons.  that's the biggest drawback for those of us that ride something else.  Polaris was pretty quick to come up with accessories for the RZR.   too bad they couldn't have done the same for the XP.  if Yamaha had the EFI two years ago, i would have been in one now.  those tires oughta be nice in the mud....

#8 Re: General Polaris Ranger and Polaris RZR Discussions » Picked up the RZR S today... » 2009-02-01 07:47:31

that poor guy!   i know exactly how much trouble/hot water he was in.    bought my side by side when the Mrs. was "out of town."  the gals don't like being out of the loop!!!

congratulations on your new ride!!!  that's the RZR that i'd buy!!

#9 Re: Where to Ride? » someone or someplace to ride » 2009-02-01 07:37:24

welcome!

although i've been in Utah 5 years now, i didn't know squat as to where i could ride when i bought the side by side two years ago.  as mentioned above, there's the Sand Hollow ride coming up.   You also might be interested in the UTV Rally taking place in May in Moab.  That's a blast where you can ride with others on easy, moderate, or difficult trails.  since i'm still somewhat of a newcomer to Utah and without friends or family, there isn't anyone that i can just call up and say/ask "You want to go riding tomorrow?"  "next week?"

there's a place to the South of SLC called Little Sahara.   lots of sand dunes and along with mountain trails.   i've been riding down there because i'm by myself most times and if i run into problems there's people around.  might have to walk a few miles.   funny thing is, i never meet anyone on the mountain trails.  they're always over playing in the sand on the other side of the highway.

anytime you want somebody to ride with, give me a shout.   my cell number is 801-309-8968.  goes for anybody....   i'm retired and can just about go anytime i please as long as i give the Mrs. a warning.

anyways.   welcome to the forum.  there's always something shakin` in the woodwork for get-togethers/rides here.

#10 Re: General Polaris Ranger and Polaris RZR Discussions » /////Alpine RZR tunes (with 10" sub under dash) » 2009-01-30 10:01:14

I’m a dreamin` man….guess that’s my problem…..I can’t tell when I’m….not being real….(Neil Young) That’s the song currently playin` on my stereo. A post over on the PRC forum was asking for others to talk about their "dream ride."  Anyways, I’ve been dreaming about putting a stereo in the Ranger ever since purchasing it. But there were other priorities that had to come first. It’s been two years now since purchasing it. Way back then, it was difficult to make a choice between the Ranger or the RZR. The Ranger won. ….ordered it with a 4.0 Warn winch (used often helping my neighbor moving rocks), extra armor, nerf bars, brush guards front and rear guard-bumper, Rangerware windshield (flip up), and a plastic roof. These accessories have served me well. The dual axle trailer has also paid for itself by hauling other things needed for projects around the house. This week, leg minder safety nets and turn signal kit were added along with a second battery. My gas gauge hasn’t been working right. It says the tank is full……all the time. That’s one quirk, this one doesn’t need. Sure, I always carry extra just in case. But, for peace of mind I put on the 06 Gas cap gauge. There’s other goodies that I’d love to have….. “Holders” for the spare tire, fuel can, tool box, high lift jack, and cooler. Bead-locks and tires. But for now, those are going to wait

Now the time has come for one of my dreams to become real. Stereo and speakers! Some of you have some great systems and I appreciate you posting up the pics too! Realistically, putting in a good sound system and having it look even half-way decent isn’t going to be a cheap install! Bare bones….stereo, speakers, pods(2), and mounts will cost me a grand from Polaris. Installing those bones would add a couple hundred more. Yesterday I visited a place called Innovative Audio. Wow! Can get a lot more bang for my bucks at this place. Went there to look at a “Kicker KMT6.” Man! Those suckers I mean speakers are huge! Wouldn’t mind putting them on our boat. But it’s overkill to put them in my Ranger. On a funny note, some customer put similar speakers in the bed of their Rhino!

I’ve been spending a lot of time in the PRC and SxS forums sorting thru posts related to stereos & speakers. Been considering the pod holders by ssv(?). But somebody else had what looked to be a cluster of speakers that mounted directly behind the driver and passenger. I’d like to find that post again! Innovative Audio told me they could put together a nice little custom install using an Alpine stereo with a plastic marine cover, under the hood amp, marine speakers, and a Sirius antenna for about a grand. Plus they could make fiberglass enclosures too. But “labor” costs will nail me, surely!

So now I’m wondering….. Can I “envision ” myself installing my own stereo system or am I just havin`a pipe dream? There is one thing I’m going to add to the Ranger that will make people wonder what I’ve been smoking. Often, when stopping for lunch or a smoke break….i put my feet up on the dash because the bus seat isn’t exactly what one could call creature comfort. Can’t see spending several hundred for a new one. Highway foot pegs….like I had on my 750 Yamaha Special would be the cat’s meow, so to speak. Harley footpegs would/will be a bit more costwise, but…. It’s gonna look a bit odd too. At my age, i could care less what people think about my ride. One more thing and I will wrap this up. I love the look of the new RZR sport!!! They should have called it a “wide-glide”…..imho. The Ranger looks like a monster RZR which I like. But…..but i don’t care for the new Ranger`s dash… Why bother with all those open cavities on that dash? ….and why take away the easy accessible storage door on the drivers side? Although I love the new seats, the rest of the interior turns me off. To do it again, I’d take the RZR wide-glide. But…the Ranger I have now, will remain in my possession for a long time. Might have to buy my wife the wide-glide…..someday. In the meantime, I will dream about what will make our Ranger even more perect.

Getting back to you....and your install.  It's perect and i congratulate you on your expertise!!!

#11 Re: Yamaha Rhino Photo Gallery » New projects » 2009-01-27 16:35:19

gotta agree!

nice work!   ever think about working on other equipment?   i'm mechanically challenged and if i can't fix anything with vice-grips or duct tape then it goes to the dealer.  would rather put my money elsewhere.   what did it cost to put to put the stereo outfit on the one with the green trim?  you still have your hearing? lol

We have family coming from Toronto in March and it's in our game plan to take the motorhome and ranger down to Sand Hollow State Park for 2-3 days of fun.   Never been there and don't know what to expect for the camping/riding.   Am putting on turn signals, extra battery system, and leg minders right now for the next riding season.  Within 3 weeks, i will be "street legal" with the hopes that the Ranger's will allow me access throughout the state park.   Don't wanna have to drive the motorhome in order to get over to the riding area.   Keep askin` the Mrs. for the dates that the family is coming but haven't gotten a straight answer yet!   Booked the KOA in Moab yesterday for the Rally.   Can't wait!!!   Maybe i'll luck out one of these days and be able to put some faces to the nicks on this board.

#13 Re: General Polaris Ranger and Polaris RZR Discussions » RANGER XP or RZR ? » 2009-01-11 21:12:03

guess it's better later late then never, eh?  ....have had my my Ranger XP for two years now and although i drool lookin at all the new side by sides that have come out in the last two years, the XP has really come thru.  it's been really handy hauling dirt and landscaping mulch, winching rocks/small boulders, pulled our 4Win`s, and given us hours of riding fun.  Never did any four wheeling or off road before owning this.   the windshield, winch, plastic roof, and brushguards were the first add-ons.   Now i'm about ready to add a few more up-grades.   The PRC forum members pretty much effected my decision when i made my purchase.   then it was a choice of RZR or XP.  since i'm an old fart, i don't care about speed.  The XP really amazes me with it's ability to climb just about anything.  Might not be the first one to get there......but you will get there.   doesn't matter what you settle on.......you will still have fun!!!

#14 Re: Where to Ride? » MORE NEW MEXICO PICS. » 2008-11-28 17:00:09

i'm coming down to Albuquerque in January to visit some friends.  ...was asked to bring my XP but have no idea where to ride it.  How far is this place from there?  i know they'd love the introduction to the side by sides...

not sure what i'd need to ride down there.  motor vehicle - OHV sticker, etc.  probably i will leave it home....

nice lookin country tho.  thanks for posting the pics....

#15 Re: General Polaris Ranger and Polaris RZR Discussions » Are windshields worth the $$$ » 2008-11-19 08:16:17

Thanks for the input guys.  Smokem, Does the roof help slow down the dust coming in when your windshield is in place?

....been/was told by others in another forum that the only way that i'm going to be able to reduce the dust coming in is to either put a full cab or at least put a back canvas flap behind me.  so........now i'm going to try making one to see if it helps.  i'm keeping a roof on regardless.  i need leg minders but really hate the idea being "confined."  if my windshield was plastic i'd drill holes in it.

btw.....the dust is coming in from the sides.  not the top.
