Newbie here again. I've got another one for you! 08 Ranger Crew 700. When I shift into High gear, and apply gas, it grinds in the transmission and I go nowhere.! However, if I real gently apply gas and feather the pedal, it will engage and not grind. None of the other gear positions give me this problem. I've adjusted the linkage to no avail and checked/replaced the transmission fluid level. Any ideas? Thanks again.

Well this does not sound good :!: , was there any metal in the oil at the change :?: , did you check the gear case engagement points at the gear case in relation to what it showed at the shifter :?: , did you try testing it at the gear case with the cable removed and was the problem still present :?: , make sure that the shifting arm on the gear case is not striped or lose on the shaft :!: :?: , if none of this works then there may be internal transmission trouble and the transmission will need to be taken apart and repaired .

No metal shavings in the oil when I changed the Transmission fluid. The shifting arm isn't loose, but I will try your recommendation of pulling the cable off and checking it from there. Thanks for your suggestions.

Are you coming to a complete stop prior to shifting and letting the engine RPM drop?
This may sound strange but try putting it into reverse briefly, then into High.

You are right, I would hope he had read the manual on changing gears while in motion, the other thing he needs to do is check the throttle cable and make sure it is not sticking and keeping the idle up by not closing the butterfly all the way, high idle would start to close the primary drive chives and cause the transmission to hard shift and grind as well while going into gear.

Sounds like a similar problem I had on an 05 Ranger. First thing is CHANGE THE TRANSMISSION FLUID with Polaris AGL synthetic gearcase lubricant, my unit takes 15.2 oz, checking the fluid level is good but will not solve this problem. Then check the throttle cable at the idle adjustment under the seat, loosen the set nut and slowly turn the idle adjustment until the engine stops, turn the adjustment back about one turn and restart the engine, slowly turn the idle adjustment until the engine barely idles without killing. If the engine does not stop with the idle adjustment, the throttle stop adjustment nut (just below the black cover on the right side of the carb) is set too high, adjust by slowly turning the nut counter clockwise until the engine stops.
