Re: Flat Iron Mesa - Moab Nov 08

The day before you guys arrived in Moab, Ravencr and I rode Flat Iron Mesa south of town.

There is a small ledge on it.

Here is the video.

Looks fun!  8)  Remind me what solid mount camera/lens you are using? I would like to get something before Moab. I have an HD Sony Handycam that I could plug in to... Thanks.

I use the VIO POV.1

By far the best I have found.

Gary has them at ATVUtah.com, cheapest on the web.

Ravencr and I have the same unit.

Badley,

I use a Bogen Super clamp.  Like this http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/5 … _with.html

It is rock solid and I can move it around quickly.

I have other mounts but use this the most.

I put one of these on top of it to make getting the shot level and square easier.

I burned through way too much money figuring out this was the best route.

Hooking a bullet cam to the min-dv camcorder is not bad.  I have one for sale.  Includes a fanny pack and wired remote control.
$350 takes it.  I have about $750 in it and a lot of hours.

Thanks - great info guys. I like the mounts Shanon, looks like it would be easy to move for various perspectives. So these two mounts would be all I need to mount the lense? The stud on the Manfrotto will fit the SLIK? Do you use the RAM Power Grip for the controller?

Re: Flat Iron Mesa - Moab Nov 08

Yes I mount the controller using the RAM grip.  It fits perfect even if you have the 12V power cord.

On my green RZR I had it mounted between the seats.  I use the RAM roll cage mount now.  If you get the
longer cable you can run it up over your head and jut about anywhere on the rig from there.

Those two mounts, the clamp and the SLIK are all you need.
I have some "Gaffers Tape" that I use to hold the cables in place.
Gaffers will not leave any sticky residue on things.
I bought a few big rolls years ago and its great for all sorts of temporary things.

The KW mount is small and clean but totally stationary and video from the same viewpoint gets boring.
Need to be able to mix it up a bit.  Get some shots of the driver/rider.  Vehicle behind you etc.

Keep in mind that the microphone is built into the cable and you need to keep it out of direct wind when
driving or you get a lot of mic overdrive with sucks.  Mic sensitivity is adjustable but nothing will fix a direct wind blast.

If you are interested we are going to go out maybe the day before the Rally and shoot some video
and get some B-roll together.  Anyone wanting to piddle with video is welcome.
