Hello, I hope questions like this are tolerated here.
I have been looking to buy a used Rhino. I have been looking mostly at newer 450's and older 660's. I found one at a local dealer. It seems to have all of the accessories that I would need...for now. It is an 08 450. Has a superwinch, snow plow, hard top, full windshield, and a rubber bed mat. It has no display, so it is hard to tell what the mileage is, but it looks like it is in good condition. Dealership is asking $6800 for it. This price seems to be in the ballpark of comparable Rhino's I see on the internet. My questions:
-Is this a reasonable price, if not what is, and what can I use as leverage to talk the dealer down?
-What should I look at in depth to see if there are any hidden issues? Tires seem decent, not alot of noticeable wear and tear.
If anyone has ideas and opinions, throw them out there.
Thanks in advance,
Erik

A rhino 450 will do everything you want except the dunes. Top speed in stock form is 33 mph and is very noisy at about 25 mph. They will do everything of a 660 or 700 except go fast. With all accesories I still wouldn't exceed 6k for it. I sold my 06' 660 rebuilt solid with extended cage, fully accesorized with plow for 7500.00. The other drawback is a 450 is going to be hard to sell down the road too.
If you are sold on a rhino I would look at the 700. I feel the 660 design for a rhino and some things Yamaha did was not up to par. The 450 hasn't had nearly the issues of the 660 except low top speed, no display on most models, and the typical noise issue as all rhino's have. Any of them will plow snow better than your neighbors atv will, I proved it time and time again with up to 18" snowfall a few years ago.
I have nothing bad to say about the Rhino other than the noise. Here is proof of what a 450 will do, this is my mothers rhino 450 pulling around 17,500 lbs.

lol cool video & i wouldnt have thought a 450 would have pulled that truck & trailer that fast or that far.
Get in tune with YAMAHA

That is a great video. I wouldn't have thought that would have pulled it either. I appreciate the replies. I am not against a 700 or a 660, I just am looking to save enough money now that I can buy a newer one if it turns out a side by side will work for me. I would hate to shell out 11 grand or more and then find out that it won't go where I want to go and it ends up sitting in the garage.

I dont know what your area is like but 95% of the time as long as the trail is wide enough a Rhino (or other major brand) will go where you want.
The other 5% is mountain goat territory.
My 700 follows my 550 grizzlys with no problem.

The width is really my only concern. I ride predominently in northern MN. It is full of swamps and some of the trails that I currently ride are somewhat skinny. Right now I figure that I don't really need to go down some of the skinnier trails, but I am concerned I might change my mind if my buddies are going one way and I can't fit. I am going to continue to look for a deal and cruise the forums for info in the meantime.

I would go with a 700 for the fuel injection. I think your buddies on ATV's will have more second thoughts about following over some things than you than you following them on a narrow trail

I agree with the benefit of FI. I am just trying to get into one on a budget and without having to sell a different toy.
I am not afraid of carbs though. I have an affliction with chopping out 70' s Honda CB750's. They have 4 carbs and need to be synced. It is a love/hate relationship.

You should be able to find a deal on a 660 - there are many for sale in this area for a fair price. The 660 carb is easy enough with stock intake and exhaust, but any mods seem to make it tricky to dial it in. If you are used to syncing 4, then it should be cake for you 8)

So my hunt continues.
I couldnt come to an understanding with the local dealership as far as price and then they sold it which helped my decision. I have since found an 07 660 with 3000 miles. It seems like it is in good condition. Has nice chrome wheels and mud tires, and comes with a roof, windshield, and a winch. I am leery of the miles. Should I be worried, or not? I am going to go back and take a second look on Monday. The guy wants 6300. Any advice thrown out before then would be great.
Thanks

I have looked at over a dozen Rhinos and several other SxS over the past couple of months. I looked at one today and I bought it. It is an 07 660 with 3200 miles with some accessories and a winch. I was worried about the high mileage, but the compression was good (164) and for the most part it was in good condition. There are several things that turned me off such as the previous owner putting about 40 horsepower worth of stickers on it, holes in the floor (seems to be a common problem), and home made accessories (roof and lights). The previous owner also took out the original seatbelts and put in junky 5pt harnesses. If they were decent I would be happy, but they aren't.
That being said, I got the dealer to come down in price a decent amount and got them to put new wheels and tires on it. It had 28" super swampers on it that were beat to he!! and were chewing up the corner of the floor.
All in all I am happy so far. I spent the evening changing fluids and giving her a checkup. Headed to the cabin Wed-Sun, so we will see how it goes. Thanks for all of the info in this site and the helpful people.
If anyone has the oem seatbelts and hardware lying around, let me know. I think I am going to hate these harnesses

Get some better harnesses from Ruthless motorsports. Simpson 5 points are the way to go or a 4 point. I would never trust a stock belt after rolling my old Rhino again. That is impressive mileage too, any oil burning? Watch the oil constantly and always check it warm, the 660's are known to suddenly run dry...from experience.

Congrats on the new ride! You will really enjoy it. It looks like it is is good condition. As for the seatbelts.... Im not sure what they had going on. It is hard to tell from the picture. Call 435-851-3637 and ask for me (jared) at Ruthless Motor Spports and I will take care of you on a new set of belts if you are interested. I may have some stock belts too but they are not that safe.
