I am looking to get a UTV and I am most interested in the Rhino. I am just wondering how much power can you make out of the 700 motor what are the best options. Also how does it compare to the teryx and ranger. I want to have a bad as$ XC style UTV that retains the dump bed. Also how difficult is the R1 motor swap can it be done with the 660 or 700 and can you retain the 4wd and rough estimate on cost of build. I know this is alot to ask so any input would be great.

If you're interested in a motor swap I would check out the "Rotax your Rhino" guys, google it. It pretty much doubles the HP and keeps it in pretty stock form. And I like the Rhino's, they are a good all around vehicle.

I would say a rotax'd Rhino would run with about everything Except for the RZR XP

Yama450yfz,
based on your user name I'm going to assume you're a Yamaha fan. I am as well, I've owned three YFZ 450s, and more other Yamaha's than any other brand of motorsport toy. I've owned two Rhino's.
But I'm going to give you a straight answer, and not just try to help you look at the world with rose colored glasses, so that everything looks rosey. If you want a bad ass SxS that will run with the best of them, I would not start with a Rhino. I would consider a Rhino to be a first generation UTV. The Teryx, Rzr 800, and Commader are second generation UTVs. The XP 900 and perhaps the new Wildcat are third generation UTVs. Each generation is markedly better than the prior generation, and by the time you get that much improvement with each generation, comparing a first generation UTV to a third generation UTV is, well, no comparison at all. The latest generation of SxS are exponentially better than the first generation SxS. I spent $15K in mods on my last Rhino, and it was seriously trick, with a long travel Elka suspension, aftermarket cage, intake mods, piston, cam, exhaust mods, you name it. My XP 900 works better and has far more performance right off the show room floor.
You can buy a Rhino if you want, and you can spend a lot of money modding it, but why not start with a SxS that is much much better right from the start?

How fast are you wanting to go? You don't need a motor swap of any kind. I have an '06 660 Rhino bored and stroked to a 780 with a ported head, 45 carb, dual exhaust, cam, piston, programmer, bronco clutch and it's more power than I need. It has a top end of close to 70, way faster than anyone needs to go in these things and has more low end grunt than anyone could need. Don't get a RZR unless you want to spend 50% of your time working on it because they break something every other time they go out it seems. As far as power, any machine can make enough if you use a good builder. My build is super reliable, monster torque and HP both. So go with the UTV you like the best and put some money into the motor.

The above is the best answer to the original Posters question for a Sport UTV . I do think there should be different categories now for UTVs which really wasn't needed around 2001 till 2006 and then came the Rzr. Ranger Xps and Rhinos were true UTVs because they were built to work and to play for a living. You will not see many RZRs or Wildcats pulling trailers or pushing plows  . They are a offshoot from the true UTV family and should really be called SUTV or Sport Utility Vehicle. Now days it is unfair to compare them all in the same category because they all do a different type of job.

This is a completely inaccurate statement ......

I'm going to disagree with this one as well. A highly modded Rhino is going to require far more wrenching than a stock Rzr XP. My modded Rhino left me stranded three times, and I got to the point where I would put a wrench on every nut and bolt on the machine before taking it for any ride. I constantly wrenched on it. My Rzr XP is only a 2012 model, so it doesn't have a long track record, but so far it is 100% reliable. The only wrenches I've used so far have been for an oil and filter change at 12 hours, 25 hours, and 50 hours on the engine clock.

I had more trouble with my Rhino in two years than I have had with my 09' RZR S and 11' RZR 4 combined - AND I do a hell of a lot more crazy stuff with the RZR's. I am still a Rhino fan, but they have unique problems just like every other machine and the will not stay with the RZR unless heavily modded (which will definately affect reliability).

Heads up, the new Viking is out. It's got a 686cc motor, a reliable power plant but you may have trouble finding good mods for the first six months. Good news is you should be able to get a screaming deal on a 2013 Rhino while they're still in showrooms. Check out good review article hereSBS Parts Blog
