We have found several states that will not allow you to ride side-by-sides because they are not an ATV according to their description. They say an ATV is a machine that you straddle the motor.
For example: Wisconsin, Illinois, Arizona, West Virginia
Have any of you had this problem? Did you find a way around it?

Are you asking about riding them on public streets? In Arizona UTV's are treated like an other car or motorcycle. There are certain items you must have fitted on the UTV to make it street legal; lights, horn, eye protection, etc.
Arizona Statutes: Article 15:
28-892. Riding on motorcycle or all-terrain vehicle
A person operating a motorcycle or all-terrain vehicle shall ride only on the permanent and regular seat attached to the motorcycle or all-terrain vehicle. The operator of a motorcycle or all-terrain vehicle shall not carry any other person and any other person shall not ride on a motorcycle or all-terrain vehicle unless the motorcycle or all-terrain vehicle is designed to carry more than one person. On a motorcycle or all-terrain vehicle designed to carry more than one person, a passenger may ride on the permanent and regular seat if it is designed for two persons or on another seat firmly attached to the motorcycle or all-terrain vehicle at the rear or side of the operator.

Several trails in Utah do not allow side by sides either. The portion of the Paiute ATV Trail System that heads west from Koosharem has a sign that says "no vehicles over 50" wide, and all vehicles must be straddled by the rider". And the Duck Creek ATV Trail system has numerous signs that specifically say "no side by sides", and have a picture of a Yamaha Rhino on the sign.

Utah is cracking down on many trails. I was caught on one that I ran over a log and on the edge of the boardwalks. It wasn't posted and I wasn't cited. They are posting them with a NO SIDE X SIDE label on the trail markers. All of the Marysvale side of the Piaute is still open to side X sides including Fremont to Marysvale on the main trail. It is VERY tight and you won't fit over a stock rhino due to the trees.
Are we camping yet?

Here in Wisconsin we can not ride on all of the trails in the state but their are a select few trail systems that UTV's can be driven on.
If any of you live in WI PM me, I am trying to get a group together for some trail rides.
