Re: Anyone found cheaper alternatives to Polaris oils / fluids?

Just hoping that someone has found a cheaper (but but equal quality) oils and fluids compared to Polaris.

I own a KTM which specifies Motorex EXPENSIVE oil.  Many KTM owners swear by Shell Rotella 4-stroke synthetic at 1/3 the cost.

Let me know if you can, THX

Re: Anyone found cheaper alternatives to Polaris oils / fluids?

Any good synthetic is fine for Polaris engines and there drive lines, The only exception is the front end were there is a difference because of how the front differential is built, they use a special additive package for that oil because of the locker system it uses, If you run yours at well below 0 'f most of the time you should continue to use 0w-40w but above that 5w-40w is fine, For The transmission use synthetic transmission fluid and for the rear differential use 75w-90w synthetic gear oil, Now about oil, remember just because an oil says it is synthetic does not mean it is, in 1999 mobile one lost a lawsuit with Castrol over the fact that Castrol was claiming that there oil was true synthetic and they were using what they call group III mineral base stocks to make there oil and mobile one was using a ”PAO” which is poly-alpha-olefin for there base stock oils, PAO and diester base stocks called group 4 and group 5 are the only true synthetic base stock oils on the market, Some judge ruled that the word synthetic was a marketing term and mobile one lost the suit to Castrol, Sometime after that mobile one started using group 3 base oils because they could make there oil  cheaper, there is really no problem with group III oils and they will work fine, any good oil made after 1990 will work fine, I use Royal purple for the Polaris and is available at pep boys and at auto zone, also remember commercial diesel oil is also rated to be used in gas engines as well, there additive package is fare better then what a gas engine oil uses,  I use Rotella  5w-40 Synthetic in my truck and cars as well as my Honda generators because of there superior additive package, here is a list of the oils as follows. Remember what you want to use is up to you but in my case I did a lot of research to make up my mind up. It is what you feel comfortable with that counts. big_smile  :?:

Group III almost Synthetics.

Mobile One non commercial grade oils.
Valvoline Synthetic oil.
Castrol Syntec
Quaker State Synthetic oil
Pennzoil Synthetic oil
Lucas Synthetic oil?, not sure at this time, maybe a group 4.
Rotella 5w-40 commercial Synthetic Diesel oil, what I use in my truck and cars and generators.

Group 4 and 5 Real True Synthetics oils.

Royal purple Synthetics
Redline Synthetics
Amsoil Synthetics
Motul Synthetics
Spectro Synthetics
Mobile One Delvac 1 commercial Diesel Oil.

Re: Anyone found cheaper alternatives to Polaris oils / fluids?

This is a list of products that I use on my 2005 ranger Xp and should apply to all rangers and RZR's as well.

For the front end I use the oil that Polaris recommends due to the locker system and it is Demand Drive Hub Fluid part Numbers 2871654 for 8oz and 2872277 for 2.5 gal size.

The transmission or gear case I use Royal Purples Max ATF fluid, Mobile One or Amsoil or equivalent will work fine as well, do not use 90w because it is to thick and will make the gear case shift to hard.

The rear end I use Royal Purples Max gear 75w-90w, Again Mobile One and Amsoil or equivalent will work too.

Now for the engine, Polaris calls for a 0w-40w but remember you do not have to run a 0w above 0'f, I use Royal Purples 5w-40w and again you can get 0w-40w from Royal Purple and other manufactures as well but it will be harder to fine and cost more and again Mobile one and Amsoil or equivalent is fine as well. I would also recommend Rotella 5w-40w synthetic as well because of the commercial additive package it contains.

Now Engine Oil Filters, Make sure you check to see if you can use a 3.24 inch tall filter on you model or year, The filter I use is one that is used for a Honda automobile and it is a Purolator pure one PL14610, I have used one since my XP broke in late 2005 and have had no problem with it at all and It incorporates micronic filtration technology and is rated on top of the SAE test , Some other filters that can be used as well are NAPA 51357, WIX 1357, K&N 198, Mobile One ML-1-110,  I Will not recommend any filter from Fram, They really are not made the way they were 10 years ago and if you like your engines stay away from them. I am not sure about using the new ECORE style filters from champion labs who changed there design at the end of 2007 and makes AC DELCO, CHAMP, STP, and SUPERTECH from wall mart. big_smile  big_smile

All the information above is for reference only and you can use whatever brands you like, the oil filters can be crossed over to other brands as well. :!:  :!:

Re: Anyone found cheaper alternatives to Polaris oils / fluids?

Ranger Dale, outstanding info.  I really appreciate it.  I actually went and bought the fluids at my Polaris dealer before you posted.

I paid about $90 out the door for all the fluids and oil filter and grease.  Although I'm doing my 25 hour break in service, I decided to go all the way and do that service PLUS the replacement of all fluids.  Since I have the Uni-Filter, it just needs servicing, not replacement.  When I asked the Polaris service guy how much this service would have cost, he told me about $600.

I also adjusted the throttle cable and the shift cable/linkage.  Greased all the fittings (13 zerks total) and there you have it!  "How to save $510 in about 6 hours!

Hope my RZR appreciates it!

You are welcome on the information, Remember, good service is what determines if you drive back to camp or get towed back, I prefer to tow someone else back with a smile on my face :!: big_smile .

You've gotta be kidding!  I just paid $140 for the 25 hour service and complete fluid change at my dealer, and that included a new air filter also!
