Re: Just Picked Up My Razor.

Now first of all, this is my first Polaris. I've always been a little leary of getting a Polaris, because after reading every ATV comparison in the past few years, there were certain features I never liked. For one, Polaris never had 4-wheel engine braking, they were too heavy, and the four-wheel braking. I never actually test rode one but always ended up getting a Kawasaki, Honda or Yamaha which I always loved. So when I saw the new Razor and then read all the magazine reviews where it seems nobody had a single complaint, I decided to take a chance and get one, and drove 600 miles round trip to get one.
These are my first impressions. First of all, it has the worst engine braking design of any ATV I've ever ridden, and it almost killed me coming down a pretty steep hill. The engine breaking doesn't just slow you down, it brings you to a halt, then it releases and starts to free-wheel so I touch the throttle to engage the engine braking again and the back end locks up and I start to slide sideways. That kind of stuff doesn't happen with Kawasaki's or Yamaha's engine braking which is so smooth and predictable, you'ld swear it had a manual trans. Second, the throttle is so touchy and loose that it is impossible to hold the throttle steady while doing slow bumpy technical stuff, of course this is my first side-by-side so maybe that's normal with a gas pedal instead of a twist or thumb throttle. I think it is much more at home on long wide-open trails and am anxious to try that, but so far I'm not crazy about this machine or Polaris Engineering.

Loanstar Racing makes a gas pedal, and claims it increases spring tenion.  I do the same thing, when you hit a bump you hit the gas.

The engine braking is just something you have to get used to.

Re: Just Picked Up My Razor.

I got the lonestar gas pedal. It's a little shorter than stock making it a little bit stiffer action, but it's doesn't solve the problem. They mention on their website that a stronger spring is in the works, but I just don't see how a stiffer spring will solve anything. I think what the RZR needs is a cushion between the pedal and throttle cable that cusions the action. I have gotten used to the inconsistant engine braking before it begins to free-wheel. I don't like it, but I'm used to it.

Re: Just Picked Up My Razor.

Just wondering if your RZR is up for sale yet. Maybe you want to sell it to me cheap since it's such a heap, I'ld love to have seconds of such a wonderful machine.

Re: Just Picked Up My Razor.

Sorry. Not for sale. It's a rental now so it doesn't matter if I love it or not. A customer took it to the dunes and after about 6 hours of riding burned the belt up with only 50 hours on the machine, and as you know, the belt is not warranted. The renter was obviously beating the hell out of the machine but I can understand not wanting to put the cvt in low-range on the dunes because it's all about speed and this is suppose to be a high performance machine, right? What Polaris and other manufacturers need is a transmission you can shift from low to high on the move. Another renter and another trip to the dunes tipped it over that punched the perfectly round hole in the front fender. So I guess the lesson here is, No More Dunes.

Re: Just Picked Up My Razor.

I just did 450 miles in Baja with no problems.  A rhino was also on the trip, going 50mph down the road you could smell his belt burning, but it heald up too.
