Re: Prowler 3.0 Build Up- Desert Race Prowler

Well, it's finally coming together. I had to scrap what someone else had built on it and start over.
It has 216ft of 1.75X.095 4130 Chromemoly and some DOM. Stands 65 inches tall when at 13 inches ground clearance. Wheelbase will be stretched 3 inches rear and 1 inch front when the new J-Arms are installed (+5 each side). The fuel cell is just sitting on the old chassie bed mount right now, but will be 10 inches lower when installed. I have to finish the rear suspension shock mounts before I can cut out the rear shock towers and install the cell.
The driver's compartment is stretched a little to accomodate the lowered seating arangement. Width of the actual chassis is very close to OEM, in fact, I will be able to use the OEM Floor and dash. The frame was cut down to just the 2 main tubes and A-Arm mount tubes. Everything from there up is Chromemoly except for a few non-critical tubes. The door bars will go in once we get the chassis welded up further.
The new air cleaner system is going to be under the hood with a functional hood scoop. The Optima battery will be under the hood also. An alternator is being installed on the driveshaft. The front floor wall panels are interchangeable with lexan panels for rock crawling and KOH so that you can look through the front floor wall and see the tires. But for desert, sheetmetal will be in place.
Not to mention the engine and clutching work going on, it'll have a top speed upwards of 95mph. Suspension travel is over 15inches front and rear.

I want to give a HUGE PROPS and THANK YOU to Johnny and Eric from UTV INC. Their help was awesome. Eric took my design and converted it to computer layout, then the UTV Inc crew cut and bent the tubes quickly and with perfect accuracy.
You guys ROCK!!!

We are going to try and have the car ready for the Whiplash Snowflake race, then run the Fall AZ ShortCourse Series. Then next year will be a full BITD run as well as a run at the King Of The Hammers Race.

I'll keep everyone posted as it goes..here are some photos showing the mockup of the seats and body panels. Door bars and lots of bracing still to be added, as is the custom built +5 J-Arm suspension.

Re: Prowler 3.0 Build Up- Desert Race Prowler

Okay, finally got some progress going on the build...

Bionic Customs is a new sponsor for the car and they are designing a complete +5 J arm suspension which will lengthen the wheelbase by 6 inches total.
Nick from Bionic is doing much of the welding and fabbing up stuff. He came up to Farmington for several days to get most of it built.

Nick and Chris at Bionic Customs are great. They have really busted their tails to get this thing going and I'm amazed at their work.

All the A-arm mounting bracing layed out, ready to be welded in. I highly recommend anyone that wants to beef up their suspension on an XTZ, contact Nick and Chris and have them install a set of these on your XTZ, they really strengthen the mounts (which are extremely flimsy to begin with)..

Re: Prowler 3.0 Build Up- Desert Race Prowler

And the latest is, just ordered new 2.0 27 inch long King Off Road Racing Shocks to replace the 19 inch OEM replacements. The new shocks will be mounted to allow 18 inches of travel front and rear (max the cv's can really take). Sold my other Kings. Best damn shocks I've found out there.
Got the new Optima Yellow Top ready to go in and start rewiring the car. Having the radiator custom built to keep the machine cool, it'll be mounted above the fuel cell and the new airbox is being built and will be installed under the front hood (hood scoop will be functional) as well as take a scoop of air from the front grill.

Re: Prowler 3.0 Build Up- Desert Race Prowler

Well, bad news, I won't make King Of The Hammers UTV Race, my dad suffered 2 heart attacks in the past 3 days. He's going to be okay I'm sure, the docs are doing good with him. But I just don't see how it's prudent or possible to make it to KOH this year.
The flip side of that is, it'll allow me time to test the car before the first big desert race (BITD Silver State 300).

Work on the car ground to a halt when my dad was hospitalized and most likely won't resume for a few more days. But here are some pics of where the car is at. All I'm waiting on is installing the dash, putting the front bumper on and installing the side nerf bars. Hope to have it in the desert in the next two weeks, barring any more health problems for dad.
But I will be in Moab at Rally On The Rocks, my buddies and I already have that planned out...

Re: Prowler 3.0 Build Up- Desert Race Prowler

So very sorry to hear about your dad. We wish him the best!

KOH will be there next year. I am sure you are bummed out but family should come first as it has for you.

As for your rig... It is looking awesome! I can not wait to see it in Moab!  big_smile

Re: Prowler 3.0 Build Up- Desert Race Prowler

It's almost done, finishing up wiring and such. Here's a few more pics from when we were doing some bracing work a few weeks ago. Forgive the fuzzy pics, didn't notice I had the camera settings wrong.

The pics show the suspension at full droop and then where they would be at full compression.

Suspension at full droop...(those tires are 28 inch tall ITPs)

Suspension at full compression...(axles were still scabbed up in these photos)...sorry for the fuzziness.. Frame is 3.5 inches off the floor...

More pics soon... and I'll have a report of how it drives....

No bind so far. I'm running these at the very close to the same travel and angle range that the new Wildcat will be at. Plus the arms are 5 inches longer on each side, so that helps.
But if they do give me problems, I'll put in 930 CV's with race hubs.
