Re: street legal?

In which states are UTVs legal on the streets?

If you're from a state where you know its legal to drive your UTV on the road let us know. Same goes for people who live in a state where you know its illegal.

If its legal in your state, let us know what it takes to make them street legal.

This question comes up a lot and it would be nice to have all this info in one thread.

Re: street legal?

In Montana the farmers saved our rights for street use. They put up a good fight and won since so many farmers and ranchers use them.

Re: street legal?

Illegal on Oregon streets.   There are a few exceptions.   Farming is one.   You cannot run up and down the highways, but in your local area when farming, not a problem.   I have a slow moving vehicle triangle that I put on sometimes.    smile

I'm in Search And Rescue.  We pretty much have a blanket authority to use them for that purpose, even on normally closed roads.  USFS leaves us alone in that arena.  USFS is much to busy managing all the timber that cannot be cut.

A few communities have passed an ordinance to make it legal drive in town.  Very few.

Re: street legal?

I got mine street legal here in Arizona along with my Raptor.  It's easy as hell here.  I ride mine all over even on the highway to get to the river.  Here in AZ you need a mirror, horn, and the Polaris license bracket that has a light shining on the plate.  Oh yea plus insurance and registration like a real vehicle.

The Polaris dealer I got mine at hooked it up with the Motor Vehicle Division for me.  I paid like 200 bucks and they registered it and sent me the plates in the mail, never had to go to the MVD.  Then I called my insurance and added it.  Booya.

You paid for registration? Should have been free since it is a perm plate? !Check into that for me so I know you didnt get ripped off.

Re: street legal?

Yea you need registration, it's like getting a new car.  You have to get tags yearly too.  I bought mine for 2 years.

Re: street legal?

We convert them here in Michigan. We have four in our group alone that are road legal.
They need turn signals, laminated glass (auto) windshield, wipers, washers, bumpers, seat belts, high and low beam lights with high beam indicator, and dot tires. Our group uses 28" tall super swamper tsl tires on 14 inch ITP wheels. It is worth every penny to get the plate for sure. It opens a lot of running here in Michigan. Just go to your secretary of state offise or DMV in some states and they can give you the information on what you will need. It is the same road legal inspection form as cars use.

PM me if you need any more info.

Re: street legal?

It's not legal in Oregon as yet, we have been working on it for some time and the best we can hope for is being able to drive on 45 mile and hour or less roads. Federal road systems require the vehicle to be crash tested for the these roads and that costs a lot of bucks.

In Montana, Idaho and Wyoming we have lots of them licensed and driving the streets going to Wall Mart and getting groceries. You need a horn, high and low beams, mirrors, tail lights and sometimes turn signals.

We have a bill going through Oregon state now trying to get them legal, it's been a ot of work but were still pushing it. We just meet with Senator Gordon Smith a week ago.

Re: street legal?

Even if you got one legal in California i am sure there would be some law enforcement officers that would still hassle you when you runs one on the streets. big_smile .
