Re: Hi all, I need your help.... gas guage irratic.

Hi, my RZR is in the shop because the gas guage shows empty when there is still a half a tank of gas...  I thought I was going to run out while trail riding because the guage was flashing but when I got to the gas station, it only took 2.8 gallons to fill it up...

The dealer is telling me that polaris wont authorize a new sending unit because it is a common problem and its normal  !!

I need to know if anyone else is having this problem???  Please let me know either way so I can show this to the Polaris dealer...  I cant believe that everyone else is having this problem and not complaigning to the dealers...

I also get a bad gas smell while riding, but I dont see any leaks...

Thanks for your help..

Someone else has reported this issue with RZR in the thread below. Some helpful info there.

Re: Hi all, I need your help.... gas guage irratic.

Thanks Mark, I did read that post about the gas smell...  However I need to hear from other RZR owners about the gas guage problem....

I finally got to the head guy at polaris and they are saying it is normal on the RZR.... \

I need to know if others have the problem of the guage showing Empty, with more than a half a tank of gas still in there....

It cant be normal....  The guages start flashing and it only takes 2.8 gallons to fill it back up

Lets help each other out guys..........thanks!!!!

We have the same issue. We'll take 4 gallons when the light comes on.

Re: Hi all, I need your help.... gas guage irratic.

Thanks for the reply.  Still, 4 gallons is better than 2.8.  I still have more than 1/2 tank when the stupid guages start flashing!!!

Thanks again

Same problem with mine. I can only get 2 to 3 gallons in when it says the tank is dry. Polaris needs to fix this for us or suffer some bad advertising. I know how to get the word out to a million people. Is it worth it Polaris?

Re: Hi all, I need your help.... gas guage irratic.

Just thought I would share my "Polaris Service" experience with you all.

I took my Polaris rzr in to winners polaris in Woodhaven Michigan...  The gas guage would go from full to empty in a matter of a few hours....  I thought I would not make it out of the woods but when I got to a gas station, it only took 2.8 gallons to fill it up!!!  I still have more than 1/2 a tank left...
The polaris dealer told me that Polaris told them that it was NORMAL!!  I called Polaris (Customer Service, Not the Dealer) myself and after talking to several people I finally got to talk to the Tech. He said that as long as the sending unit reads 4 volts at full and 0 at empty then it is fine.....

I am no idiot........   Of course any sending unit would pass this test...  The truth is that it works like a potentiometer.  The highter the float rises, the more voltage that feeds the guage, the higher the digital readout goes.

After arguing with the tech for a while , he decieded to have the mechanic try bending the float...  When the mechanic tried to remove the sending unit from the tank, he found a stripped out insert in the plastic tank...

He said he would have to wait for Polaris to tell him wheather to drill it out and fix it or to send me a new tank....   It seems to me that the mechanics have to work hand in hand with the Polaris corp...  They cant do anything without prior approval from Polaris..  After 4 days of waiting for Polaris to call my dealer, I was angry and sent Polaris several emails and left several messages...   On day # 7, Polaris finally authorized a new tank and sending unit....  Total of 14 days at the dealer for a 30 min job...

To make a long story short I got so tired of waiting for winners to install my tank, I asked the manager if i could just take the parts and do it myself!!!  He agreed......
the tank install was easy and now my guage is much more accurate... Now it takes about 4.5 gallons when it starts flashing.....  (better anyway)

But here is some good info for you guys...

When I took the old sending unit out of the original tank, I saw a float at the end of a metal wire simular to the size of a coat hanger...  It would be so easy to simply bend the float wire up about a half inch and it would make our guages much more accurate....    You could easily thru trial and error, make it where Empty means 1 gallon or less......
there is only 8 5/16 bolts that bolt the sending unit in....

This is an easy fix...     Come on Polaris... This is a simple Vendor calibration issue!!!!!

This is my first Polaris...Even though I like this RZR, I dont think I would buy another one... I have had more than 13 Hondas and never had to take one back for warranty issues....

Prior to this issue with Polaris (motor co.)and Winners Polaris (dealer) I was contemplating trading my 2003 Harley Davidson Ultra Classic for the new Victory Vision...   I am too dis appointed with the Polaris customer service and quality to consider.........

Polaris needs to listen to their customers and build quality into their products in order to over come the reputation from the early years.

I for one, will buy Honda atvs and stick with Harley Davidson or Honda motorcycles......
