Everyone interested check this out.

It takes Salt Lake County out of the deal and some other interesting restrictions. It will help when it comes to having to cross roads to get to the trail. Doesn't go into effect until October of 2008.
Anyone interested in turn signal kits or tires let me know. I tried making mine street legal when I purchased it but was told "NO" by the UHP and UDOT.
Step in the right direction finally by our government!

It's jumble to me. It basically covers farm towns less than 7500 people and outside the salt lake county. Vehicle must meet motorcycle requirements and no operators under 16. This is only a good stepping stone for future highway use . SUWA  had tried very hard to stop this bill however Huntsman signed it to go in effect October 2008.

I have written a long thesis on this over at atvutah.com.
There are two threads.
WHAT mods do I need to be street legal Oct 1?

WHERE can I ride Street Legal on Oct 1?

I am in a continuing dialog with the state to get exact details.
I have been promised a copy of the state inspectors handbook, the guide the safety inspector will
use to go over your rig, by July. If you are not setup according to that book you will be rejected.
Anything else is hearsay.
Be careful what you buy right now. Vics lights are the wrong color. Arizona is different than Utah.
You will NOT need DOT approved tires BTW.

Thanks Redman.... I might have to buy a smartcar that has less horsepower and 10" shorter in lenth than my rhino for now for salt lake county. I could always put the body of one over my rhino frame!

For you guys in Salt Lake County there is an option.
You can petition the county to designate OHV access routes.
I would suggest you map them out in great detail and get on the County agenda.
Show up with as many signatures as you can get.
Best way to do this is hang out in your favorite dealerships with a clipboard.

A quick question on this:
If I am allowed to ride down a single lane road with a speed limit of 65 why would they limit my speed in a utv to 45? Or am I only allowed on a road with a posted limit of 45 max?

You will be able to drive on any two lane hwy ( 1 in each direction) no matter
what the posted speed limit says. BTW, the HWY might have a short section that
has 4 lanes like through the middle of a town like in Marysvale. That does not
mean the Hwy is a multilane Hwy. You will still be allowed on it. The numbers of lanes
is a designation given by the Hwy dept. So effectively it means stay off of the freeway
since every other Hwy in Utah is a 2 lane Hwy.
You are limited to 45 mph at all times.
This is the compromise that kept us from needing to add DOT approved tires.
If we went over 45mph we would have had to switch. We didn't think everyone would
like the idea of springing for DOT tires.
Personally I didn't think this was a bad trade. I don't plan to be cruising the oil for 50
miles at a whack anyway. Of course I can't keep you from speeding.
BTW, I saw a really sweet looking Street legal kit yesterday.
All LED lights, a couple of different styles to choose from. Easy install.
Should be ready to go as soon as the Safety Inspection manual is published.

I just wrote an article for UTV Offroad magazine on this. It should be in the next issue.
Also writing one for Dirt Wheels. Not sure when it will publish.
I have an interview set with the state guy responsible for the Inspection manual on Monday.
If he tells me anything we don't know I'll update you here.
