I ahve spoke to a few people about this and keep getting different answers from all. What is the real purpose?
Primarily for wheelbase width?
Does it provide a smoother ride?

Widens wheels for more stability....More travel for a smoother ride...
BUT  is VERY expensive and move tire so far out from under fenders, it throws stuff up into you and if you ride on the east coast, it is harder to find trails to fit between trees and such
