Re: Buying a used Rhino

Can anyone give me some tips as what to look at when buying a used Rhino? I am going to look at a 06, it is the camo version(no lcd screen)and the only add on is a winch. The owner claims the only things wrong is the 4-wheel drive switch has to be replaced(a recall he did not get to before the warranty was up) and a broken tail lens. The price is $7500 firm as-is. I have 250r's and a pilot(to strokes) so I am familiar with four wheelers. I just don't have alot of experience with 4-strokes and it will be the first time looking closely at a rhino.
I would also like to use this as a utility vehicle using it for doing some landscaping around the house and hauling rocks. Does anyone really use rhinos for working?
Thanks for any help.

Re: Buying a used Rhino

Work ???  lol  I am new to Rhino's - had mine about 2 months - so I am not the one to give any advice. My son wants a Rhino now and we have not found anything used in our area except 1 06' 660 - it sold in 1 day for $9500 (I paid $10,500 for my Sport new)  roll

In about a month when the POOlaris rzr comes out, there will be alot of rhino for sale, some people will buy anything if they think it's better. As they say. a fool and his money are soon parted.

Re: Buying a used Rhino

Thanks Max - almost put a deposit down on a RZR.  Signed - "almost a fool"   Decided I didn't want to wait or buy new "bugs". The Rhino more versatile, been around a while, and the aftermarket huge. No regrets. Looking for used one for my son, he has been thinking 450 - told him we will eventually find him a used 660 - within his budget. I would say the 660 for $7500 not a bad deal if the engine and drive train are strong.

Re: Buying a used Rhino

I am no expert here either.  We use our Rhino around the farm here alot.  The wife hauls rocks with it, I use it for fencing quite a bit too.  Its great to throw all your tools/gear into it and go out and do the job.  We also took it on a fishing trip deep into the mountain.  4 hours by truck, then 7 hours by Rhino/Quads.  I was the only one with a UTV, all the other guys had Quads.  The trail is quite rough, lots of rocks & ruts.  We were out front most of the time.   8)   You won't regret it.  I had a Kawi 700 4X4 with 28" tires, chipped, etc.  I sold it a couple of months after getting the Rhino.

But back to buying used.  I would give it the usual checkover.  Make sure the tie-rod ends are tight, U-joints are tight, grab the driveshafts coming out of the engine case and try to move them around.  I have heard of a few guys where the bearing went inside the case, and the shaft was then sloppy.  (high milage units)  Check oil level, what color is it?  Check the undercarriage, is it all banged, dented?  That should tell you how it was driven.  Also check the CV joint boots. (8 of them)

I'm sure others may have something better to offer. BUt that is a good starting point.

Re: Buying a used Rhino

My family uses our 660 rhino for utility work on the family farm and I personally would not use anything else. I've had plenty of farm trucks etc., but they just don't match up to the versatility of the rhino. I have hauled everything from rock, gravel, dirt, hay, and plenty of deer in the bed of my rhino. The only complaint I have for using the rhino for work on the farm is storage. When I have a full load in the bed of whatever I'm hauling, it leaves very little room to haul any tools etc. As for buying used, I am not qualified in this field. Sorry can't help there.

Re: Buying a used Rhino

I went and looked at this used 06 rhino and for being 6 months old I could not believe the condition it was in. They drove it like they stole it! After putting some $$ together on what it would cost to put this machine back in shape I figured I could buy a new one. So I call a couple dealers around me and decided I wanted the sport edition, found one, made a deal over the phone and brought it home on Saturday. Now I am really looking forward to the weekend. Thanks for all your input.
