Re: New To Forum And I Need Your Help

I am new to the forum, just registered today. I have a 2006 Rhino 660 Special Edition. I was hoping someone with some experience could help me out with with a fuel problem Im having. I was experiencing "vapor lock" on extremely warm, actually hot days and the Rhino would just crap out and die and not start until it cooled down. After letting it sit and cool down and sometimes removing fuel lines to attempt to diagnos the problem it would start back up and run fine.

I decided to go with an "electric fuel pump" to try to get around the problem. I first purchased a very poor quaility fuel pump and had nothiing but trouble until it just quit working. Then speaking with some friends they told me I needed to get a good quaility fuel pump. So I purchased a "Carter" electric fuel pump (Only model number I can see is P61295S). The guy at the parts store said it should worrk fine for the Rhino. I then encountered the problem of the fuel pressure being way to high and flooding the carb, and actually running out of the overflow tube. I started looking for a "fuel pressure regulator and finally found one at a Kragen. It was somewhat cheap looking, a dial type, but someone told me they had used one similar and it worked for them. Well...... it did not work for very long for me and I ended up having to find a higher quaility regulator. I ended up finding a "Holley 12-803" that was adjustable from 4.5 to 9 lbs pressure. I just finished getting everything installed today and tried to fire it up and to my disapointment, I still have the problem of the gas going right through the carbarator, even trying to adjust the pressure way down.

I'm at loss now as to what to try.............Does anyone see soomething I've done incorrectly. I'm not sure what to which direction to go now.  I really figured I had it fixed with the higher quality parts, but the problem still persists. Does anyone know what fuel pressure the Rhino is supposed to run at (2006 660)?

Any help I could get would be much appreciated. Thanks,

Re: New To Forum And I Need Your Help

The fuel pump I used was from Pep boys. They have to be around 3 psi to work, comparable to a vacuum type pump. Badley wasn't able to get his electric working which is the same as mine and others have had bad luck also. I would stick with a Mikuni pump since vacuum is more likely to be reliable to an electric. The one Badley ended up with is great due to two line connection.

I often still wonder if flooding with this electric pump is not an issue at low throttle. I might try going to the vacuum and using the electric as a boost :?:  or a back up pump.

I noticed that the fuel line runs right next to the head on my 06.  I'm not sure if the fuel pump would have anything to do with Vapor lock, if indeed that is what it is. The pump will pump the fuel to the carb and then sit there under pressure until the engine needs it. I would try rerouting the fuel line and insulating it with aluminum foil and see if that might help.  I am in vegas and have had no issue with anything like vapor lock myself,
Just an idea.

I may be getting old but I'm not dead yet.

Re: New To Forum And I Need Your Help

The factory Rhino carb can only handle between 2-3 psi. Are you sure it was vapor locking when you had the factory fuel pump connected? Here is what I suggest: Reconnect all the factory fuel pump and lines, and then run it until you experiance the same issue again - then disconnect the fuel line from the carb and crank the motor. If fuel comes out, then the factory vacuum operated fuel pump is working and you have another issue. I have seen aftermarket CDI boxes cause the same type of issues when they get hot or cold.

Some other things to check:

*Fuel pickup tube for any cracks or anything clogging it (I seen plastic and other items in them)
*Gas cap (make sure it has the vent installed)
*Tip over valve (located behind the fuel pump) - if it is clogged or stuck close it could cause a vapor lock
*Vacuum line to factory fuel pump
*Fuel filter (change even if it is new - some cheap ones cause the same issue)(plus carry a couple of extras)

Finally, if it is the factory pump - Replace it with a factory one (they provide more than enough fuel for a factory carb - and you wont experiance the over fueling problems caused by an aftermarket electric pump.

Good Luck - and you might check out Mendoza's Offroad - they might have something you need.

Backwards!!
