Re: New to UTV

Hello everyone, I am a 50  yr old male and have been away from off-road for awhile. in my younger years i had dirt bikes and most recently about 10 years ago I had sport ATVs.  I am now looking to return to the off-road world in the form of a UTV side by side.  i have been doing tons of research but am still confused.  anyone who wants to wade in with the pros and cons of each let me know i am open to all opinions.

Thanks
Chuck

Re: New to UTV

Welcome Chuck! Been busy, I think everyone else is riding (except me  ) I own a Rhino and I am happy with it. I want a Teryx and I can't wait for Can Am's entry in 2010. I know that might not be much help, but... if I were to buy one today it would be a Teryx. Local dealers blowing them out for $8295 (base) to around $8600 ors o for an LE. RZR's are still Retail + , but maybe the best pure sport machine, especially if you like to roll  lol

Re: New to UTV

well i knew that post would bring you all out of the wood work, i feel much better now!  Badly, why the Teryx?  Think I have narrowed it down to either that or the Rhino.  i think if the teryx had FI it would be a no brainer but it is a little larger/heavier/taller than the Yamaha.  the yamaha seems to have a lower center of gravity and I feel like i am sitting in it rather than on it.

Re: New to UTV

What kind of ridding will you be doing?  Sand dunes, forest trails, open country, other?

Will you be using it for hauling, towing, work stuff or just for play?

Do you plan on modifying it to go faster or put improved suspension on it?

Are you looking for a 4 seater option or just 2 seats?

Re: New to UTV

Mainly because of Martin. Teryx seems to have a lot of power potential. His has been modified (hi Comp. pistons and cam I think) with a stock drive train and after watching him tear it up in Moab   and having nothing break, I am sold! Check out the 2 video's in this thread... it is the black one  8) .

I too would rather have EFI. The Rhino is proven and would be an excellent choice. The aftermarket is by far the best. Yamaha customer service is the best IMO. I really love my 07' Sport - except when I am in the sand I wish I had more power.

The Teryx can be had for less money, power potential better, drive train looks bullet broof, aftermarket stepping up. If you wait until the 09' are out they should have EFI.

If you care to answer Mark's questions I think you will get specific opinions based on your wants/needs.

Re: New to UTV

Thanks guys for all the great info, i agree with all said about the teryx.  the BIGGEST problem with the teryx is that it is too tall for my toy hauler door stock.
I live in vegas so in the winter time it will be desert trails, some dunes but not real hard core.  summers will be higher elevation mountain trails to beat the vegas heat.  mostly looking for something that we can trail ride and explore with while out camping.  don't plan on doing any major upgrades (yea I said that about every Harley I've owned too!)  I have a dealer that is offering me an 08 rhino not se, out the door tax, license, fees, for $10,600 is that a good deal?

Re: New to UTV

If the Rhino will fit in your hauler and you will be changing elevations, I would go with the Rhino and EFI. I don't know how much license and tax are in NV, but that sounds like a OK deal. I think you could do better if you are willing to travel - some local dealers are pricing same machine 09' at $9790 before tax a license. As a comparison some dealers pricing the standard 08' Teryx at $8249. I would think you could get a better deal on an 08' Rhino, but with the price of fuel you might end up paying about the same if you drive very far to pick it up  sad

Re: New to UTV

thanks again, there is 7.5% sales tax, the base price to get that out the door at $10600 is around $7500 i am thinking rhino is the way i am going to go.
