[font=Arial:3a130d1073] [/font:3a130d1073] Have an '06 Ranger XP 700 EFI with 115 hours. Recently it began to stumble with very light throttle pedal off idle. No problem at higher speeds, just very low speeds. I suspect tps, but in order to check it, book says technician needs special test harness with 9 volt battery. Anyone run into this before? Anyone made the test harness?

This what you are going to need to do, you are going to turn the key on and put the probe on the back of the TPS connector on the yellow wire with the red lead at the TPS connection with a multimeter, put the black lead to chassis ground, back out the idle screw until it does not make contact with the throttle blade, you will need the special driver from Polaris or you can make something that will work, the butterfly will be in its maximum closed position. You should get a reading of .528, if it is not loosen the TPS screws and rotate the TPS until the voltage is reached, when the right voltage is reached tighten the TPS screws and turn the idle screw in until you get a reading of .710 for the 2005 and .640 for the 2006, if you are running the SP ECU it will be .710 volts, this is the proper voltages for the throttle blade position at idle, it is a little hard to do but it is doable, lots of the polarises lose there adjustments for some reason and need to be checked for proper engine fueling, mine was off when i checked it when i upgraded it to the SP ECU and had to reset it. also pick up a can of CRC Mass air sensor cleaner and clean your T-mapp sensor.

Thanks RANGERDALEXP. Few questions for clarification.
1. Is my low end stumble a voltage setting problem, or a faulty tps sensor?
2. Is what your are calling the "special driver" the test harness that includes a place to hook up a 9 volt battery?
3. Can the driver/test harness be purchased from Polaris?
4. I know what the ECU is, but what is the SP ECU and why did you change yours? Do you recommend a change for me?

Answer to question 1 is that the stumble could be a bad tps sensor but most likely an adjustment problem, you need to test the sensor, for question 2 is a screw driver to adjust the butterfly on the throttle body, you do not need to get the test harness to set up or test the TPS sensor, for question 3 the screw driver is only available from Polaris and is one of the stupid things that Polaris tries to do to stop people from working on there own machines, other people have been able to make one that will do the job but takes a little craftsmanship to do, for question 4 the SP ECU is what comes in the Polaris sportsman and is one of the things that Polaris changed on the ranger XP to drop the horse power down to 40 HP, the other is a slightly softer camshaft, the sportsman 700 motor is rated around 45 hp and by adding the SP ecu to the XP it will add around 3 more H.P. to the ranger xp, it really will only work on the 2005 and 2006 models, on the 2007 models you can not unlock the rear end with this ECU but will still get the power gains, the stock ranger 700 engines run real lean and the rev limiter has been decreased along with a less aggressive timing curve with the stock ECU, the SP ecu puts it all back to what the engine was built for, it will make the engine run much better.

Thank you again for your quick response.
I will need the test harness regardless whether or not I need a new tps or to reset the voltage. I can buy kent-moore products at a discount.
I misunderstood the special driver. I haven't looked at that screw, but am quite adept at making tools. If not, hello Polaris I guess.
Doing some additional research today, the Polaris part no. 2201519 is a kit that that includes the test harness plus a regulator. This is around $50 retail.
Nice looking truck, toy hauler, and toys. I am looking myself for a toy hauler. The problem I have found so far is the size of my Polaris Ranger XP. The height and width cause some problems with most of the haulers I have looked at. Been using my crewcab and open trailer.
Thanks again.

Remember, you do not need the test harness and save the $50.00, all you need to do is stick the probe in the back of the plug and turn the key on to test and set the sensor, a small paper clip will help if your meter probe is to big, also with a small screw driver you can pop the pin out and permanently solder a small test wire to the pin like i did to test it in the future if needed, thanks on the comment on the picture also , I will try to watch the post if any other questions come up.

Hey guys, I have a XP with clutch kit and belt from EPI, K&N, Polaris pure pipe off sportsman, and when it gets warmed up after about 15 min the key light comes on and it starts to run like crud, backfiring and poping.... any ideas? The fan is working, thermostat is opening and closing. My book says it doesn't have a key light on my '06 as it is an early '06 (built 11/30/05) and I am lost. Any help would be great!

The 2005 to the 2008 have the same check engine light and use the same codes and test procedure, everything you have said sounds like the TPS sensor and should be tested for the proper settings of .640 volts for the 2006 model unless you have upgraded to the SP ECU then it would be .710 volts, remember that the ranger xp runs lean from the factory and noticed that you are not using a fuel controller with the pipe and air cleaner, this would make it run even leaner and is not good on the engine, what does your plugs look like and how many hours are on the ranger :?: , also check the wiring harness to the TPS sensor because there has been reported problems of broken wire in the plugs themselves, polaris has a replacement part for this, let me know if there is anything else you need help on.

I do have a big gun power box. I have 145 hours on it. I have never checked the TPI and it does the same with the power box off. Stock ECU. Mine doesn't have the gauges.

I would run the check engine light procedure to see what code it is and go from there, key on and off 3 times and leave the key on at the 3rd and count the blinks, The TPS sensor tells the engine how much fuel to send the engine at any given throttle position, the other thing is if the K&N oil has contaminated the T-map sensor it could cause trouble to, also what can cause your symptoms could be fuel delivery from the pump, a bad pump or plugged fuel filter.
