The rear ends are normally what don't make the whining noise but it is normally the transmissions, that may not be the case with yours, jack the rear of the UTV up and chalk the front wheels front and back, take a long big screw driver and put one end to your ear and the other to the parts in question to isolate were the noise comes from while in gear and running, BE VERY CAREFUL HERE BECAUSE IT IS A VERY DANGERIOUS AND YOU COULD GET HERT :!: , THIS IS TO BE DONE AT YOUR OWN RISK :!: , you can get a mechanics scope from the auto parts store also that looks like a doctors scope with a long probe on it to do the same thing, you need to drain the fluids from the transmission and the rear gear case and check for metal and water in the oil since you have received it second hand, if it checks out try removing the roof and see how much of a difference it makes in the sound level also, the dealer has a valid point here , the 2005 thru 2007 models have always made noise but because of some part upgrades Polaris has made them much quieter on the new models.

My 08 ranger xp was so loud I didnt want to ride it anymore. It kept getting worse. I put about 40 hrs on it total. I called the dealer and they told me it was normal but to make sure bring it in and they will take it for a ride. I Took it back and the mecanic went for a ride and when he got
back to the parking lot he just drove passed us and pulled it in the shop.
My problem was the transfercase. They called polaris and they sent a new gear set for it. (all Warranty). I went down the road before putting it
on the trailer. It was great!! Almost silent. It has about 75hrs now and still the same. I love it. Have your dealer check it. Hope this helps.

The 2005 and the early 2008 models have a straight cut gear set and the mid 2008 ones have a helical cut gear set, the early ones are a stronger transmission but not as quiet as the later ones, it is in the nature in the beast in the early ones and there is not a lot you can do about it unless you spend a lot of money for upgrades , the mid 2008 models were much quieter due to the transmission modifications for the year, he could upgrade to the newer model gears on his 2007, but it would not be covered under any warranty, mine sounds like a Alison truck transmission and i except it for what it is for a 2005 ranger XP, the transmission is checked all the time and after break in has no metal in the oil, the one thing everybody needs to remember that Polaris did not worry about drive train noise in the earlier models and did not start making changes till the middle of 2007, the middle 2008 to 2009 have had most of the updates done to ease the ears of people on this problem for the cost of strength.

The roar tells me it is the drive belt, that is the way sound when they start to go bad, i would pull it and check it, a roar is different then a whine.
