grinding rhino need help

Last weekend at muddi gras in FL my rhino started to make a grinding sound when i brake. all day fri it was good and most of the day sat then in the late afternoon it started to grind. When i hit the brake pedal it starts with a grind like the brake pads are gone wich they are but it also sounds like some gears are grinding as well. When i drive fast or slow 4x4 or 2 there is no noise just when i brake. I have not had a chance to really look at it yet but as we all know the brakes are on the rear drive shaft so that worries me. Has anyone had this same problem or maybe knows whats goin on.

Mine sounds the same when I brake hard or going down a steep grade. I have been told it is common and nothing to worry about. Anyone? It sounds terrible :? Sounds like the transmission is in between engaging/dis-engaging (if that makes sense).

Yamaha mechanic at UTV Rally said to replace rear pads frequently (with cheapest pad you can find). Dirt builds up and make the pads squeak, nothing to do except replace them. I usually clean mine well with preasure washer when cleaning machine, and apply some "de-squeaker" spray on the rotor - CAUTION - brakes suck until you get it worked in :?

Thanks for the reply! It sounds like you have the same deal as me. The (trans in between engage/disengage) is the best way to discribe it actually. Gunna change the pads I hope its nothing thanks again.

This is dust/dirt on the rear rotor. It is common and can be sprayed off after use.

I used to work for Yamaha(4 years). The problem is the rear brake rotor and pads. If you forget and leave your parking brake on and ride it, it messes up the rear rotor and brakes. Change both of them and the sound will go away. Trust me I sold a lot of rotors and brakes.

Trooper nailed it. The brake pads may look good but they're glazed and need to be replaced. I had some like pulling them apart and sanding the pads with a die grinder with a 120 grit disc, but it was only temporary. Get some new pads and make sure your parking brake is off before moving

Yamaha mechanic at last years rally gave me a set of rear pads... gues I should get off my lazy a__ and install them :oops:

I am looking to do my brakes as well, my rear rotor look ruff . I probably should reolace the rotor at the same time.
To remove the rear shaft to get to the rotor, is there an easier way? How do you remove the shaft? Any pointers guys? Thanks in advance, Kelly

Remove your stock stone gaurds on the inside of your brakes. I got a rock in between the gaurd and rotor and bent alot of things i wish i had not. They hold mud and rocks in better than they keep them out. Cleaner brakes last longer. I took mine off and have not had a problem since. No grinding here. hope it helps.
