Help 05 Ranger 4x4 won't go into high while running

Have a 2005 Ranger 500 4x4 will not go into high while motor is running, shifts into L N and Reverse fine. Can put into high while motor is off, crank and works fine. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Sounds like the primary drive is not fully disengaging when the engine is running, make sure your idle is not to high and check the primary clutch, check the motor and transmission mounts also, they are critical for transmission and engine alignment, service the gear case.

Does it grind or sound like it is trying to engage?

Yes, it grinds but only in high gear, low and reverse work fine.

Idle was too high. Couldn't get it to idle down with adjustment screw. Had an air leak in the rubber intake boot. Tightned clamp and idled down with no problem. There is also a throttle cable adjustment underneath where the throttle cable connects to the carb, not visible unless you know it's there and can help fix the high idle.
