My four wheel drive is not working. The dash panel shows that it is engaged but it does not work. Any ideas?

When you flip the switch can you hear the electric actuator engage like normal?

I found the problem. My front axle on the passenger side came right out of the housing. Therefore I have a new question. How did that happen?
