Re: Rear Axle Pops Out

Has anyone on here had that problem with their 1000? My friend's has now done it 4 times in less than 12hrs on the meter.

He has tried the o-ring trick and it does not work. I think that it might have something to do with the high heat that is generated in the rear diff box and that heat is kept in instead of expelled out like on other SxS's. Has anyone tried taking the bladder off to see if that helps with relieving the heat?

Re: Rear Axle Pops Out

How close does the exhaust come to the diff? It's very close on the 650 and I think this is part of the problem, I hope anyway. I've wrapped it with header wrap and am in the process of making a heat shield. I'll give em a try this weekend.

Re: Rear Axle Pops Out

i cant say that i have any exspiriance with any of the arctic cat UTVs but it sounds like maybe there is a failure in something like a snap ring or locking nut on the inside of the diff. My cousin sells CATS I have to stop by there tomorrow so ill ask around and see if they have had any thing like that happen yet.

damn toys, if it aint one thing its another.  roll

Re: Rear Axle Pops Out

There is too much of a heat build up in the rear differential during the 50+ mph driving and the presure builds up until it pushes the axle out. That is 1 theory that they are looking at and the other theory is basically that the axle shafts are too short to work on the 1000 and the factory is now making longer ones as the articulation and higher speeds pops the axle out of the differential housing.

They have fixed my friend's AC1000 but the factory will not tell him what they did to it and neither will the dealer - mainly because they do not want to make a recall situation out of it and they will repair only when the owner brings it in for a serious rear differential oil leak from the axles popped out of the housing.

Re: Rear Axle Pops Out

The heat buildup is not just limited to the 1000's. My 650 does it, it gets so hot you can't lay your hand on the diff without getting burnt. Anything getting that hot will expand I would think, maybe just the 1000 has the torque to pop the axle out after everything heats up. I thought the heat was due to my parking brake having a slight drag but the 1000 has a totally different brake right? Disk at the wheels rather than on the pinion in front of the diff?

Re: Rear Axle Pops Out

Same type of rear brake. There is a 1000 at the dealer right now that caught fire from the parking brake being left on.

Does your rear diff have that tiny breather tube venting into a bladder or to open air?  I don't know why they have it vent into a bladder, as that will not let the heat escape.  My friend is going to re-tap the vent hole and run a larger diameter hose up in to the rollcage to vent out the high heat.

Re: Rear Axle Pops Out

I talked to the tech that works for my cousin this morning and he has fixed a few of them and says that once they pop out once it can damage the gear or the tip of the shaft so that when its reinstaled it will not fit tightly. he has replaced the shaft and gears on a few machines. he said most of them were on the 1000, Big tires and lift kits make it worse. Sounds to me like there should be a free air vent put in 3/8 or bigger

not much help, hope it all gets worked out

Re: Rear Axle Pops Out

So far the new fix is working but the AC 1000 is up in Colorado getting fitted for a turbo right now so we will see how it does with even more power going to the rear axle. It was free (as it will be the first one by this company) so he said "Why not."

It will be featured at the Moab event this month..

Mine has the bladder going up behind the passenger seat. I have 2 on order and i'm going to T those together to give more room for the heat to expand. I tried just removing it and added a fuel filter but it filled it with gear oil the first trip out and overflowed. Wonder how close the exhaust comes to the diff on the 1000's? The rear brake appears to cause drag with one of the pads even when you have the parking brake adjusted all the way out. That and the closeness of the exhaust are probably what causes all the heat.

Re: Rear Axle Pops Out

The muffler appears to be far enough away to allow plenty of cool air between itself and the diff. housing. It is very close to the rear brake system and his has melted the brake cable once already.
That is funny about the vent tube problem, as my Teryx vents into the rollcage without a bladder. So heat carries the oil all the way up into your bladder - not just hot air.

Yes and under pressure too. I made the mistake of jerking the bladder off the hose after a ride and got a nice shower of hot gear oil.
