Well I was reading around here and on the internet. I own a jeep buggy that for sure is 99% more extream then 99% of all side x sides, and I go places i dont expect the wife to follow at times. BUt on basic trails or in teh hills and such, she wants to look in to a AFFORDable something to enjoy while I do what I do and maybe go everywhere I do on occation.
We are in a tight budget and thinking a quad might be our only option, except we do have a 16yo daughter and a 19mo boy. both of which would be nice to take on occation (one or the other at least), so a quad is out for that.
Looking for help on what a good used (can be old or newer) should cost and which are lower cost yet something meeting basic needs mentioned. Not looking for fast over function. I am a fabricator by trade and can easily add tube or such to bring it up to safety par. but looking for ideas as to affordable models that I can search on for sale sites for. And what I should be looking at $ wise?

You go with us to Moab this fall and we have people in the group that will wow you with what a side x side can do. We have jeepers often impressed, They are not just a sand buggy to us here in Utah.

I agree that they can be very suprising, but I know for a fact that I have yet to see anything with the wheelbase or ground clearance to do gatekeeper in calico, or sledge or jack hammer in johnson valley or even johnbull in big bear.

Im sure there is someone who could get a side x side up or down "Gatekeeper" its not about the machine its the driver. The bigger the machine and the bigger the tires the easier it is. I use to own a 87 YJ Jeep with 38 inch tires and 10 inches of total lift, lockers front and back military axels and all that good crap like long travel shocks, rotator spring shakels and low range gearing so I know what Jeeps are like, how much they cost to fix, how many tools, jacks and spare parts and a welder you need to carry for one day of off roading and what a jeep can do. Rock crawling with a jeep is not that big of a deal, dont get me wrong its fun and challenging, but you only have rocks to go over and it is almost always a hard surface where someone else has already been, (been there done that, got old) Go find your self a nice skidder trail (logging trail) on the side of a mountain with mud, stumps, skidder rutts, rocks and brush in your way. Im not talking a house lot that was just cut off Im talking 100-200 acres of clear cut. Then let me know how your jeep does. But dont come here and say that jeeps are 99% more extreme than side x sides just because thats what you own, For one thing your in the wrong forum to be dissing side x sides, second If you dont have a side x side then you most likely dont know what they can and cant do and remember you came here asking questions. So show some respect.

Robert - look for a used Rhino. An 06'-07' would probably run between $6-8k - more if loaded. Easy to fab a safe cage and add a rear seat and harnesses - then you can take both kids. The Rhino is not the fastest, but IMO one of the best built/reliable, and very predictable crawler.
I expect you will be like other "jeepers" and convert to a sidexside youself. Less expensive to operate and repair, more reliable, easier recovery, easier to get to the trail, faster, more versitile, better floatation, etc. The video you posted is not very intimidating. Check out some of the vids on this site. Bigger rigs with big tires and wide/long wheel bases take a different line than we would. The fun factor is there for both.

Agreed. I wouldn't myself do half of the things I've seen people in this forum do. Here in Utah we have more rough terrain than sand so we play a little rougher.

well I will leave all the what can do what alone. I have seem and know what a buggy on 40" tires can do, and watched both try things at almost every location I have gone to for some crawling.

That is how I would answer the question! FI would be be much better than the older carburated, I guess I am used to people trying to save a couple K. I believe a base model is still 10k, and start adding accessories and that will climb fast. Used markets has been high IMO, but there are deals out there and they are usually already accessorized. 13-15k would buy a trick (used) machine! It is all a matter of what fits your budget. I would rather have a new machine - break it in and take care of it to my standards and accessorize my way.
As for the "pissing match". IMO the biggest difference between a "buggy" and a UTV is scale! I will stand by what I BELIEVE are advantages of UTV's. My wife and I have always wanted to build an old Bronco for ??? We like trails, crawling, and Baja style riding - how do you build a machine that does all three well? At what cost? After seeing a Bro-in-law's Rhino we knew that was it! UTV's are very versitile machines and I can do some serious crawling with the same machine that I use at the Dunes and on the trails. The scale of this machine works very well for me - shop space, trailering (tow vehicle), recovery, economy, the list goes on... If you want to fair, compare your buggy to this:

If buggies are your thing that is great - we will all respect you and what you prefer. You should do the same. I have found UTV enthusiasts to be the best people anywhere! All of us that are in to Motorsports have much bigger enemies (than each other) like people trying to close down places we like to ride :evil: !
