:? I have a 08 RZR with 1900 miles on it. I meticulously maintain it and have religiously serviced the airfilter system due to all the issues the RZR intakes have had. However, since about the 1600 mile point it has been using oil. Over a weekend at Glamis or the Cinders (in Flagstaff, AZ) it will use between a 1/2 and a full quart of oil. Now that it is using oil, I suspect the rings may have been damages by contaminates getting in through the sub-par intake system on these machines. Has anyone had this problem? Am I on the mark with my suspicions or could something else be causing this? Let a brother know.
Also, I have the extended warranty on the machine. With that said, and if it is the rings, what are my odds that Polaris would fix this? Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Ken

It is not normal to use that much oil and yes take it back to the dealer for the warranty :!: . My ranger XP has almost 300 hours of running time and does not use a drop of oil. The 2008 RZR have had problems with the air intake in silty conditions that is why they have made major changes in 2009. It is part of the problem when the engine almost sits on the rear wheels in the wide open and is exposed to all the dirt and mud from the rear wheels. I never could understand why they did that but that is what it takes to make it in a small package. Take it back and push the issue....

I think polaris should recall all pre 09's and retro-fit the new intakes on them. How much better are the 09 intakes, do they completely solve the issue? different location for it or just how its made? Wonder if the 09 will fit the 08??? I bet it would right?
Any how yea I would take her back for warranty work and give em hell. I check my intake every other ride for debris. I have had mud and water in the filter housing but it hasn't got past the filter....yet Good luck let us know how it turns out.
If it's not fun why do it?

Great news for anyone having issues with the upper end of an 08 RZR. There is a fairly long list of early production 08 RZR's that had a serious defect with the intake system which was subsequently repaired by a recall. Mine was one of these machines, purchased new in July 07, and eventually recalled in early 08. Because of this defect, Polaris is now willing to fix, at no expense to me, the upper end of my 2000 mile machine. This will include pistons, rings, new cylinders, new valves, and all labor expenses. Even though I have the extended warranty on mine, my service tech informed me that Polaris has extended the origional warranty an additional 18 months to cover this particular problem. So, if you suspect you might have a problem with the upper end of your 08 RZR, I'd encourage you to take it to your dealer and inquire about getting it repaired.
I should point out that in my case, my machine was running fine and not smoking at all. The oil loss was the only issue I was having even though my dealer informed me that I had lost over 30% of my compression and had over a 10% compression difference between the two cylinders.
