Re: RZR Engine Failure

Just (likely) burned down an engine on my 08 RZR despite frequent filter cleaning. Suspect due to known poor design of air filter/intake. Burning oil as well so rings/pistons probably have been bad for awhile. Is Polaris intsalling an updated version under even though my warranty is over? Will they cover my engine? I have about 1000 miles on the machine. Anyone know of aftermarket or improvised air intake system updates that will eliminate this issue?

Thanks,

Steve

Re: RZR Engine Failure

Steve. Did you install the equipment that Polaris said to install to fix the problem. If so the warranty was extended and you should be able to get it taken care of by the dealer, If you ignored what they said to do it could be a problem but a good dealership may ignore the fact that the upgrades where not installed.

Re: RZR Engine Failure

Dale. The only upgrade I was told about was a different air filter which was free after applying for online. I have to tell you that I already had an upgraded foam filter and prefilter which are washable and I was very diligent in washing it and applying filter oil to both. It seemed vastly superior to the paper filter which they sent me (so I did not use it). Do you know anything about the upgrade for 09? Or are there alternate ways of getting cleaner air to the box, such as the use of a K and N filter installed in the plastic between the seats (rather than sucking in air through the crack between the plastic which has a piece of foam currently which probably wouldn't stop a rock, much less dust from getting through). I love this machine and will pay if I have to for repair but, would like to do anything I can to prevent further problems.

Re: RZR Engine Failure

The K&N flows more air but does not filter down to the smaller micron rating like a high quality paper or synthetic element. There was a series of changes to the 2009 to the air box and the way it seals to the intake boot and a shield added in the bed. The best way is to run a snorkel kit to pull air from a cleaner air source. let me look into the changes and i will post it later.

Re: RZR Engine Failure

This is to the best of my knowledge what they changed to the 2009 RZR air box system in red.

Re: RZR Engine Failure

Thanks for the advice. I'm new to the forum; have had the RZR w/out problems and pretty much stock so no prior contact here (this forum) but it's nice to know that there are people/resources like you that will help. My local dealer has a poor reputation and they generally are stumped or unhelpful with my snowmobile/quad problems or questions. This, despite the fact that I have purchased several new machines from them.

It seems logical to me that a snorkel system (utilizing some type of flexible tubing extending higher?) up on the machine would cut down on dust, could utilize more than one filter (if needed) and would be better (cheaper) than anything Polaris offers. Unless they have a new design out now that will fit the 08. This is all supposition. I don't have any facts, just musing.

Thanks,

Steve

Re: RZR Engine Failure

Everything in red is backward compatible but it might get pricey. there is several snorkel kit out there but some of the best ones i have seen was custom ones that people built.

Called them next day, said they were putting all new bottom end in. 4500 dollars. the manager said it wouldn't cost me a thing not even a deductable, pick it yesterday runs great. I bought a new style afe filter that self cleans and you don't use any kind of oil on it. Has anyone used one of these filters? Any perment solutions for this problem?

Re: RZR Engine Failure

The only thing i know is there has been no issues as fare as i know of on the 2009 and 2010 upgrades for the RZR. Till i see multiple postings saying otherwise i think that is the only fix or maybe a snorkel kit to pull the air from a cleaner source. I am going to look into the filter that you have since i never seen one yet.

Oh and welcome to the forum truck66 ....
