I have always wanted to travel out to the redwood forest in Nor Cal. I live in Missouri. I hae never been west of Colorado. I know nothing about cali. But I would like to maybe next year take my family camping in the red wood forrest. I would like to do some riding on a side by side. I dont have one presently. I used to have a rzr, but it wasnt great for farm work, so I sold it. I will probably be getting a new ranger 800. Anyway are there parts you can ride these things out there. Would it even be worth the trip to drive out there? I know there are a lot of places where side by sides are off limits.
I have a wife and 2 young sons, so I figured I would build an extended roll cage with back seats that attach in the bed. Also what are the fire arms regs out there. I know you guys have some deadly wild animals. I just want to make sure my family stays on top of th efood chain. maybe a springfield armory .40 and a benelli shotgun, just to be on the safe side. Will I get in trouble for any of this? I really have no idea where to even check, adn I always get good advice on stuff from forums. So I figured I would join here and start learning for a trip next year.
Thanks in advance.

The redwoods are one of california's most protected areas now days and i do not think any riding other then horse back is permitted and that would be only allowed on certain trails. anyway here is a link and maybe you can call them to see.

The only way to see the Redwoods is a Subaru at the trail head and good hiking boots If you want to carry a gun you need to be in a gang Sorry guys, I couldn't resist Don't worry about the shotgun, it will just piss off most Bears and you won't be able to aim at your back to shoot the Cougar  Larry and Kyle - you guys are from NorCal... whats the scoop on SXS's and guns? BTW I am from UT, so don't listen to me :?
Seriously, the Redwoods are beautiful. I drove through and went on some shorter hikes.

AAHHH GUNS The only way your going to ward off any BIG animal with a shotgun is to use the gun as a club and hope you out last the animal or to use a high grain slug round and double O-buck and thats only good for a couple hundred feet at best.
A semi-auto 12 gauge 30 inch barrel with a load tube that holds 6-8 rounds would be best loaded with two types of rounds alternate rounds between (slug - doulbe O-buck - slug - double O-buck and so on) that will maximize power with pattern. Your still gonna get up close and personal with what ever is looking for lunch.
Dont waste your money on a Benelli, they kick like an old mule, cost more and they are no better than anyother gun. A Remington 11-87 is a great shot gun and alot less money. (personaly I have owned both and stand by the Remington) has never let me down once. Another down side is that a shotgun is slow to load when you are in a hurry.
If your looking for something for protection look into a .30-06 or 300 win-mag rifle. With a rifle you can carry a loaded clip and it takes only seconds to be ready to fire, both very dependable rounds and they will knock a bear on its ass for sure. (as lonag as its not a gut shot) any large animal with lunch on its mind is going to go the distance if its not hit in a kill zone.
Something a little easier to carry in a side x side would be a 44 mag or 45 handgun, lots of power for large animals (not the best) and not easy to aim in a hurry and just might break your rist on the second shot.
I carry a 40 s&m Sig-Sauer P229 on my Rhino. Light and accurate and it holds 12 rounds in a clip. (Not good for larger anaimals thoe.)
MY SIG
Lastly, thank god we still live in a country that alows us the FREEDOME TO BEAR ARMS , with the correct permits you can carry a gun (just about) anywhere anytime. I just dont your local laws on a loaded gun. In Maine you can carry a gun anytime as long as its not loaded unless you have a concealed gun permit.

Thanks Titan, my little pistol is now a bb gun I carry a Baretta PX4 9mm in the SXS's, mainly for the human species. Not a very big slug but I can fling 17 rounds rather quickly :? I have never had any bear (or other wildlife) trouble, hope I don't cause a 9mm would likely just piss him off too!

Larry can cover the gun stuff better than I. I don't own one You won't be doing any riding anywhere near the redwoods. It is worth the trip to see them though, just not in a sxs.

Baretta makes a great gun they shoot very smooth and 9mm is a good self defence round, as far as shooting a large animal with it, I am afrade your gonna come out of it worse than the animal, something like a wildcat/mountain cat you may have a 50/50 chance the noise alone may ward them off.
I had a Baretta 9mm for 12 years, it just didnt have very good range, my Sig 40 is double the range.I got some bird shot for my Sig 40 today damn raccoon keeps getting into my shed, the last one I shot with a slug made a big frigen mess, hope the bird shot doesnt do that.

I always carry my Kimber .45 cal., you won't need a permit for AZ., just carry it out in the open on your hip. I have an AZ. CCW, New York State CCW and I am retired Federal LE, so I am covered in any state, just haven't figured out how to get it to Alaska.
I ride with several Viet Nam Vets and they are all armed to the teeth, no problem. As far as CA. goes, leave your SxS home! Can't ride anywhere.

There's a few places to ride here in California, it just depends on what area your gonna visit.see my post on Jawbone Canyon, its a great place to go with kids.Ghost towns, caves, mines. sorry no redwoods though, maybe in Tahoe area on fire roads.
Offline
Tahoe is great, Rubicon trail or just cruising around on fire roads with huge granite boulders everywhere. Don't think there are any redwood trees up there. Lots of pine. As far as the wildlife goes, you might run into a couple of hippies but nothing requiring a firearm. Mostly National Forest there so shoot at what you want. P.S good snowmobiling there too behind Kirkwood ski area. P.S.S SMITH&WESSON never fails!!
