What I did with the rear is to turn the preload adjusters up to the second to last notch. It raised the back by about 3/4" and the ride seemed to be a little firmer. I will keep the springs in mind if I notice the rear end being smashed down too much when I put 300 pounds of deer corn in the back.
Thanks again for all the help and information.

Bill

I think I will wait to see how the vehicle handles at my hunting lease this year. I bottomed out last year on a couple of rocks as I came  out of a dip; however, I had a pertty good load in the Ranger and the front end squated pretty badly with the stock springs. Now that I have the stiffer springs, I don't think I'll have that problem. With the new springs, I have right at 10" ground clearance, measure at the lowest point of the chassis just in front of the front wheels.

Thank you guys for all the help. With the advise I received here and on the Polaris Ranger Forum, I was able to get the springs installed without the use of a spring compressor. The secret is jacking up the front end until the wheels are about 3" off the ground. You then release the top of the shock from the frame mounting brackets and remove the spring retainer nut and washer located at the top of the shock There are two bolts, one at the top and one nearer the bottom, on the strut holding the bottom of the shock in the strut. If you loosen those bolts, you can lift the shock out of the strut while the top of the strut goes up through the mounting hole in the frame bracket. Once the bottom of the shock clears the top of the strut, you can remove the shock and spring assembly very easily. Now all you have to do is slide the original spring off the top of the shock and replace it with the new H/D spring. Reverse the order to reinstall.
If anybody needs to do this, don't let the job intimidate you in the beginning like it did me. The real eye opening assist was the removal of the shock from the strut by loosening the two bolts in the strut and taking the shock out of the strut.  Now that this is done, I may order a 2" lift kit and do it all over again, this time installing the lift washers.

Thanks again for all the advise. You guys have been terrific. If anybody needs any help doing this, please don't hesitate to ask me. The whole process is very fresh in my mind.. lol

Guy, my problem is I don't know the terminology well. What is the upper strut pivot assembly?
I removed the top of the shock from the upper mount, but felt like I couldn't swing out the shock and spring assembly far enough to remove the nut on the top of the shock that  holds the spring compressed.  I have never done any mechanic work on the front end of a car or an ATV so, I'm sort of like Ned and the first reader here.
How high do I jack the front end of the Ranger. I was afraid that the axles would come out of the differential as I was warned of this in some other instructions that I've seen. If I jack up the front end, loosen the struts where they go through the frame mounts, then pull the top of the strut spring assembly away from the upper mount to loosen the top spring retainer nut, won't the spring come off when I remove the nut at the top of the shock? I don't see where I will have enough clearance to lift the spring up off the top of the shock. Do I need to remove the floor to the front storage area?
I know you guys are trying, but pretend I'm just a dumb ass when it comes to mechanic work on the front end of a vehicle. I've never done it before and I don't want to have my Ranger stuck in the driveway, unable to move it because I screwed up.
Thanks for any additional explanation you can give.

#5 Re: Ranger and RZR Performance Mods » Installation of H/D springs front end of 07 Polaris Ranger » 2008-09-27 08:35:17

With the installation of a winch, lock and ride windshield, roof, and cab back, the front end of my Ranger is somewhat squated because of all the extra weight. I purchased a set of heavy duty springs (preloaded to 144 lbs rather than 122 lbs of the standard springs) but they came with no instructions and I have no experience pulling apart the shock/spring assembly.
Any help would be appreciated. I am able to jack up the front end and release the top of the shock from the upper mount; however, I cannot get the spring off the shock strut and I don't think I have the clearance to pull the spring off the top of the shock once the spring retainer is removed (that's something I'm not sure how to do either)  HELP!!  smile

Does anybody have any experience changing out the front springs on a Polaris Ranger? With the winch in the front and the lock and ride windshield, roof, and cab back, the front end squats down a bit with the front springs being depressed more than normal. I purchased a set of H/D springs (preload @ 144 lbs instead of 124 lbs) which should do the trick. They came with no instructions and I'm  a little hesitant to just start pulling stuff apart up on the front end.. Any help out there??

I've been trying to think of a way to hold a rifle in the cab so that it is easily accessible. The distance between the front of the seat and the dash board, doesn't allow much room for a scoped rifle without banging it around when trying to put it in place or remove it. I came up with this devise, which is part of a virtical rifle mount sold at Sports Academy. The butt of the rifle sits on the seat on some foam rubber to keep it from moving around and the barrel goes into the pictured mount. It's secured to the roll bar with stainless hose clamps. I use different foam inserts to secure the barrel of different rifles.

Yep, last year, after Christmas, it got down to 9 degrees for 3 mornings in a row...! To me that's cold enough. big_smile

I finally got my lock and ride cab system installed. It was not as easy as they make it appear on the Polaris Web site. After installing the rear, top, and windshield, the first sentence in the instructions to install the doors reads, " First remove the rear panel, top, and windshield. Needless to say, I wanted to strangle somebody. Once I got the door hinge brackets attached to the roll cage bars, installing the doors and removing them is very easy and takes no time at all. Overall, I am pleased with the cab system. It will do what I want it to do and that is keep me out of the wind on those cold west Texas mornings.

Guys, just got a letter from Polaris. Seems like they just put out a service bulletin that recalls 07 Polaris Rangers in order to replace the front engine mount. Problem occurs when the front engine mount breaks or becomes misaligned and causes the drive belt to also become misaligned and the belt to prematurely fail.

I will make an appointment to have my front engine mount changed tomorrow. If any of you guys have had that problem, I suggest you contact your Polaris dealer to see if you can get some relief for your out of pocket expense, if you have had to pay for that repair in the past.

Hope this helps some of you. The service bulletin number is R-07-07 for all model year 2007 Ranger 700 EFIs.

Attached two pictures of my latest updates, including a 1" Sch 40 PVC rack that I built to go into the lock and ride holes in the cargo bed. Since I'm installing the "Lock and Ride" Cab enclosure, I was losing the ability to attach bags to the frame cage, so I designed and made this PVC cage for the cargo box. The gun case is attached by bolts and fender washers to pieces of 1" PVC which then slips into the holes in the cargo bed side walls.

The picture of the dash board shows the location of the winch remote that I installed and the toggle switch to energize the winch contactor on the bottom right of the switch panel. I also installed some running lights on the brush guard the switch for those can be seen in the lower left side of the switch panel. (red illuminated rocker switch)

I order the "Lock and Ride" cab system for my Ranger yesterday. It should be into the dealer by Wednesday of next week.

I built a rack system on the rear bed of my Ranger using 1"PVC. It gives me additional tie down locations and a place to hang my storage bags and a rifle bag. I think it looks nice too.  I'll post some pictures of the rack tomorrow and will post the pictures of the lock and ride cab and my opinion of it when it arrives next week.

So far, I like the Ranger. I'll give my overall opinion of it after this coming hunting season where it will be used in the hill country around Ozona, TX.

One thing I will say now is that it cruises at around 25 mph very smoothly with no loud engine noise or sounding like it is over reving.

Being down here in Louisiana, you never know when you're going to be in water up to your a#*&#@. So I thought the prop would be nice touch! lol

This was the most difficult accessory to mount, so far. The carriage bolts are too long to screw the nut onto when fully inserted in the brackets and there is no room for a rachet to tighten the bolt. Little short strokes with an open end wrench

Next will be the lock and ride cab enclosure... stay tuned.

I got my winch mounted along with the front and fender brush guards. Not too difficult to do; but, a helper is in order when trying to hold the winch and line up the bolt holes.
