Re: What type of oil to use for Ranger 500 cc 2001

I bought a used Polaris Ranger 6x6 2001. I did not get the owners manual. Does anyone know what type of oil to use for the crankcase?

Thanks

Any good synthetic 0w40w or 5w40w weight oil will be fine for your polaris 500cc.

Remember not all mobile one is a true or full synthetic oil in the US anymore but a high grade group 3 base stock oil called Hydrowaxes since the castrol/mobile one law suite a while back. The motul is a PAO or Ester base stock oil along with Royal purple, Red Line and Amsoil  .

Re: What type of oil to use for Ranger 500 cc 2001

Polaris says you should ONLY use a 0W-40 Synthetic Oil.

Use only 0W-40.

You need 2 qts to change.

btw - AMSOIL is a PAO Group IV oil.

castrol/mobile one law suite a while back

fyi - Mobil simply filed a complaint with the National Advertising Division of the Better Business Bureau in the US claiming that Castrol was engaging in false advertising by calling Syntec "full synthetic" since it was now being made with Group III base oil. Castrol was able to present enough "evidence" to convince the NAD that Group III base oil could legitimately be called synthetic, so they rulled in Castrol's favor. This ruling has no "legal" standing. It merely means that as far as the NAD is concerned, an oil company is not falsely advertising an oil as "full synthetic" if that oil is made from Group III base oil.

Re: What type of oil to use for Ranger 500 cc 2001

Of course Polaris will say that you need to use there oil and that is just another way for Polaris to make more money from you. There is almost no difference between a 5w-40w motor oil compared to a 0w-40w oil except for the extreme cold weather rating. There is better oil out there then the Polaris stuff you can use. According to the Magnuson-Moss act  a manufacture can not force you to use there product over another. Also Polaris oil does not have an SAE/API rating and was never submitted it for testing with them, Polaris would have to pay for that rating but chose not to.

As for the Lawsuit and or ruling, It did open the door for other manufactures to use a group III base oils as well as some of the newer Mobile one products to cut cost. They do not use a true synthetic base oil but a modified mineral base stock. It is kind of funny that only in this country they are allowed to call a group III oil synthetic but in Canada and over seas they are not allowed to do so and must use a PAO or Ester base stock oil or remove the term synthetic off the label.

Btw, I have always known that Amsoil was a PAO IV oil as said in my earlier post.

This Is an Article from A person that has done a lot more research then I did and I have done years of it because of what I did semi-professionaly in the past .

In the late 1990s, Castro started selling an oil made from Group III base oil and called it SynTec Full Synthetic. Mobil sued Castro, asserting that this oil was not synthetic, but simply a highly refined petroleum oil, and therefore it was false advertising to call it synthetic. In 1999, Mobil lost their lawsuit. It was decided that the word "synthetic" was a marketing term and referred to properties, not to production methods or ingredients. Castrol continues to make SynTec out of Group III base oils, that is highly purified mineral oil with most all of the cockroach bits removed.

I also had read all the info that this case was put before the NAD as well.

Re: What type of oil to use for Ranger 500 cc 2001

I was not pushing Polaris oil, just telling him what the manual says.

Polaris oils are made for them by a custom bottler in Minnesota called LubeTech which blends, bottles and custom labels for a many Powersports and small engine oem's like Arctic Cat, Husqvarna and others.  The have names for their lube designed so as the consumer can not decipher just what the lube is and is a common equivalent.

I have many customers riding Polaris equipment, buddy has a 1999 6x6 he bought new, another had a 2004 crew.

I too read about the NAD case, when it was taking place. I get many of the trade magazines.

I completely agree with with what you said about what the manual says but i would rather recommend a much more superior oil like what you sell or Royal Purple, I personally run the Royal Purple 5w-40w because it is much easier to come buy for me then Amsoil now and I am not running anything below -30 deg F so the 0w would never be an issue in a warmer climate. As for the NAD, I never thought they were qualified enough to make the ruling they made and it had negative ramification's to all the oil industry. People really think now that If it says true or full synthetic on the bottle that they actually really get a synthetic oil in this country roll .

On another note, how would you like to become a site sponsor :?:   lol .

Re: What type of oil to use for Ranger 500 cc 2001

There is some glitch in the automated system that won't let me. I tried numerous times on numerous visits but each time it says cc verification denied and there is nothing wrong with the cc's and I tried several in very good standing.

Also, the "Refunds and Cancellations Policy" link leads back to the "Side X Side Forum Advertising" page.  In other words, can't find that info.

I tried again today, same thing "Card authorization failed. Your order could not be processed."
